Constable J. O’Donovan, Court orderly at the Wellington Magistrate’s Court, has been tiansferred at his own request to Stratford, where he will be in charge of 'the station vacant by the recent death of Constable Leahy. Constable O’Donovan Las been in the police force since 1879, and ■during the greater part of that time has been stationed at Wellington. His unfailing courtesy and strict attention to his ■duties have earned for him the respect of his superior officers, and the esteem of all those with whom he was brought in contact, and his departure .will be regretted by a very large number of the public. We wish him all prosperity in his new sphere of labour. The duties of Court orderly will, for the present, we understand, be carried out by Constable M. Foley. The Hawke’s Bay saw - millers have formed themselves into an association for the purpose of promoting the success of the trial shipment of timber which the Government have undertaken to send to England. The manager of the Hawke’s Bay Timber Company, acting on behalf of • this Association, interviewed the Secretary of the Department of Industries and .Commerce yesterday to ascertain all necessary particulars. He is now waiting a reply from the Minister in charge of the department (Hon Mr Ward), to whom the Secretary has telegraphed. Two tenders, both from Christchurch, have been received by the Public Works Department for the construction of the steam-boilers required for the laundry at the Sunnyside Asylum. Instructions have been given to accept one of them but the name of the successful tenderer will not be dir closed until the contract is signed. The Postal Department has been informed that the colonial mails which left Auckland.by the Mariposa on November 3rd, arrived at London on Thursday last, a day late.
