■ London, October 18. The Government is reinforcing Colonel Colville, who is preparing for an effectual occupation of the Nile provinces.. Mr M. W. McEwan, chairman of McEwan and Cc., Limited, speaking at the annual meeting, said he believed the bottom of the Australian crisis was touched, and they might now reasonably look for better times. A committee of British creditors in the Mercantile Finance Trustees Agency Company of Australia, together with Mr Stewart, Official Receiver, purpose urging the Melbourne liquidators to bring* civil actions for the recovery of advances made to Melbourne directors. ; London, October 19. The New York correspondent of the Daily News states that the Republican leaders, in view of the success of the new tariff, are about to abandon Piotoction. London, October 20. The English, Scottish and Australian Bank shows a gross profit for the year of .£104,000, leaving a balance, after paying interest on debentures and deposits, of <£lo,ooo. The liability of the old bank lias been reduced by <£1,200,009. • It is reported that Colonel North s syndicate, which purchased the Wealth of Nations mine at Cooigardie,. has issued a prospectus of a company with a capital of .£700,000. The Marquis of Salisbury, who was asked to act as one of the judges of the best scheme for an Imperial Customs Union, for which the proprietors of the Statist offer a prize of 1000 guineas, will appoint a judge to act for him. .The ship Lady Lawrence is overdue from Geelong to Great Britain, and is being* reinsured at over 10 per cent, premium. ■ o London, October 21. The mission of Mr Sandford Fleming, of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, and Mr W. H. Mercer, of the Colonial Office, to Hawaii, to negotiate for the landing of a Pacific cable on Neckei* Island, has according to Honolulu advices resulted fruitlessly,the Hawaiian Government being adverse to conceding or leasing the island owing to the treaty with the United States. : t London, October 22. Sir Westby Perceval, Agent-General for New Zealand, is urging the formation of a colonial co-operative distributing company, which shall focus the produce trade in London* and reduce the outlay in commissions. He proposes that the necessary capital shall be subscribed in England.
