JABEZ BALFOUR.

From Our Own Correspondent. Mr Jabez Balfour, like many other great men who have sought retirement from the cares and temptations of a wicked world, has taken to literary pursuits. He has not only beguiled the monotony of prison life with translations from Spanish-romances, but distinguished himself in the role of polite letter-writer. Interesting extracts from his epistolary lucubrations are published by the Pall Mall Gazette and thb Daily Chronicle, and they are not only full of philosophic wisdom, but of the purest and loftiest religious teaching; and as Jabez is nothing if not a financier, his letters disclose the most philanthropic solicitude for the economic progress and welfare of Argentina, which has afforded him a safe asylum from the clutches of Scotland Yard. He sees unlimited possibilities in the country under a proper system of administration—Mr Balfour’s, to wit. If Argentina were handed over to him to exploit after his own methods, the world would witness such a “boom” as has never been seen within the memory of man. From Jabez’ letters, it is evident that he still preserves that pure and elevated Christian piety which has hitherto marked his career. He concludes one of his most Pecksniffian epistles with tho liberal benediction, “God bless you all!” Will this blessing be a# fervently reciprocated by the shareholders, depositors and creditors ?
