Masterton, October 18. A meeting of the newly-formed Wairarapa Cricket Association was held at Cartertofflast evening, Mr Izard presiding. It was decided that the Association play handicap matches, that the nominal subscription of each club to the Association be a guinea, and that two rounds of matches be played. The rules of the Wairarapa Cricket Association of 1888 were adopted with slight alterations. Seven club's have already joined the Association, , and the championship matches will probably start early in November. The following are the classifications of the ; North Wairarapa Rifle Club for the forthcoming competitions : Class A Major Donald and Messrs W. 11. Beetliam, W. Welch, Kibble white, Blane, Kummer, Matthews, Cameron (4), McLachlan, Anketell, Hoffeins (2), McKenzie, Bright, Wardell; Mb wlem, E. Kibblewhite, McHattie, J. Williams, Morgan and G. Bentley. Class B—Messrs R. Cameron, Hessey, Dorset, Chamberlain, Cole, E. Welch, Edlin, Day, Caselberg, Seager, W. Williams, Wallace, Smith, A. Welch, E. S. Dixon, Murray, Stewart/Townsend and H. Welch.

In the Magistrate’s Court this morning a case was heard in which W. Fellingham claimed from W. J. Pearse the sum of £lB for wages. The defeuce was that there been an arrangement that the two were to exchange work. His Worship held that under the Workmen’s Wages Act such an arrangement could not be made. J therefore be given for the plaintiff for the amount claimed. v. Masterton, October 19.

In the Magistrate’s Court this morning, Charles G-urote, alias “ Bismarck,” was charged with the larceny of five sheepskins, the property of Messrs Elder Bros., of Langdale, of the value of accused admitted having taken the skins, but said that he did so to protect some goods which he had in his trap. The Magistrate convicted the accused, and sentenced him to two months’ imprisonment.' ' ~• ■

John Bxtrrows, a well-known sheep farmer of Taratahi, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, under section 47 of the Stock Act, with failing to send in a return of his sheep within the prescribed time. He was further charged under section 71 of the same Act with falsifying a return he had sent in lately. The Magistrate held that a proper return not having been' sent in, Burrows could not be charged with falsifying, Tor failing to send in a

return when required he was fined 40s and 1 costs. W. L. Falconer was fined 40s, and A. Stempa and R. McKenzie, 20s each today for breaches of the Rabbit Act in failing to do those things which in the opinion of the inspector are necessary to destroy rabbits. Masterton, October 22. The young man John McCrae, charged with stealing a horse belonging to Messrs Beetham Bros., of Braneepeth, of the value of .£lO, and a saddle and bridle belonging to a man employed on the same station, was brought up on temand this morning. After hearing the evidence the accused decided to reserve his defence, and in both cases was committed to take his trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court. The first competition for trophies by the North Wairarapa Rifle Club took place on Saturday. Although the weather was unfavourable, Mr T. Morgan, late of the Taueru Rifle Club, succeeded in putting up a score of 67 out of a possible 75. There were altogether 14 competitors. A meeting of the newly-formed Masterton Cricket Club was held on Saturday., evening, when Mr W. 11. Beetham was elected president; Mr E. M. D. Whatman, captain; Mr W. Broad, vice-captain, and Mr W. R. Bone, secretary and treasurer. It was decided to open the season on Saturday next. October 23. The weekly meeting of the North Wairarapa Liberal Association was held on Monday evening', when several new members were elected. It was resolved to present Mr A. W. Hog'g, M.H.R., with a testimonial at a “ social ” to be held in November. It was also decided to invite the Hon W. P. Reeves and Messrs W. W. Collins, J. W. Kelly, A. W. Hogg and W. Hutchison, M’s.H.R., to address a labour meeting here this week. In a letter to the Borough Council tonight, Mr C. A. Pownall, one of the candidates for the Mayoralty, requests that in the coming Mayoral election all burgesses be allowed to vote, whether rate defaulters or not. He maintains that under Section 72 of the Regulation of Local Elections Act this must be the case. It is reported that on several stations in this district the rates for shearing are being reduced from <£l to 17s 6d per hundred. Masterton, October 24. . The weather is threatening for the show to-morrow, but tho glass is high. The attendance at the show promises to be very large. Already there are numerous country visitors in town. The Hon W. P. Reeves and Messrs Hogg and Hutchison, M’s.H.R., have written up to say that it is- impossible for thqm to attend the proposed labour meeting this week. It is probable, therefore, that the meeting will be abandoned. The manager of the Masterton Gasworks wrote to the Borough Council in strong' terms on Tuesday evening concerning the way in which the business of the Council was conducted. The Council became indignant, and passed a resolution informing the manager that it w;as quite able to conduct its own business, and resenting his interference. One councillor referred to the letter as monstrous, and an insult to the Council. The Rev. Mr Peryman continued tho special services in the Masterton Wesleyan Church last evening, and gave ah earnest address on the words “How snail we escape if we neglect salvation ? ” The annual meeting of St. Matthew’s Boys’ Club was held on Tuesday evening. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of <£B 15s. It was resolved that the subscription in future be 5s a year instead of 2s 6d. The Rev. A. C. Yorke was' elected president of the Club, Mr H. Bagge secretary, and Mr W. H. Jackson treasurer. The Rev J. C. Andrew, of lea, was fined <£2o and costs at Tenui to-day for neglecting to take proper steps to destroy the rabbits on his property. In consequence of a resolution passed at a meeting of the Borough Council last evening, Mr P. Collins has sent in his resignation as manager of the Masterton gasworks. The Masterton Park trustees have resolved to proceed with the erection of a grandstand on the park at a cost of £2OO.
