A shocking- fatality occurred at St. Kilda, Melbourne, on the night of October 14. Through the accidental upsetting of a kerosene lamp, a woman, named Ellen Jarrett set fire to her clothes, and was burned to death before assistance could be rendered her. The deceased was 62 years of age, and was the wife of a night watchman named Georg© Jarrett. Valued at <£loo an ounce is a certain book in the British Museum. It is a perfect copy of the original edition of Shakespere’s sonnets, published in 1609.- There are only two copies in existence, and the second one is valued at <£looo. As the book is only ten ounces in weight, it is worth a good deal more than its weight in gold. 13 A dredger powerful enough to cut its way through soft rock has been construe-* ted in Scotland.
