Palmerston North, June 25. A young man named William Elsworth was brought into the Hospital on Saturday night from Woodville, suffering from a compound fracture of the right leg. He was engaged on the Ngaturi Bridgo, which is being constructed over the Tiraumoa River, and, losing his balance, fell a considerable distance. The sufferer was brought in by Mr Fraser, tho contractor. We shall have the luxury of swimming baths hero very soon, as a contract for their erection has been signed between Mr R. Edwards and the Borough Council. The erection of a Courthouse by cooperative labour will bo commenced here immediately. The death is announced of Mrs Catherine Flanagan, wife of Mr R. Flanagan, of Longbum, at the ago of 49 years. Mr Flanagan's daughter died on the previous day. An incipient fire was discovered yesterday morning on the premises at the corner of Church and Princess streets, at present in the occupation of the Manawatu Farmers' Co-operative Association. Very little damage was done, tho mischief being principally confined to tho charring of some of the woodwork and tho destruction of a few sacks. A man named Collins was afterwards arrested on a charge of being illegally on the premises. Collins pleaded guilty at tho Magistrate's Court to the charge of being illegally on the premises, and was sentenced to four months' imprisonment with hard labour. Accused was further charged with the larceny of a waterproof coat, valued at £3, tho property of Robert Currie, and several pairs of socks, tho property of another person. Collins pleaded guilty to both charges, and was remanded until to-morrow for the production of a witness. Palmerston, June 27. A sad accident occurred this afternoon, when young Carl Hansen, son of Mr C. Hansen, draper, the Square, whilst playing in a football match between the drapers and the other shop a ssistants, had his right leg broken close to tho ankle. Dr Satchell attended the sufferer. A public debate is to be held to-night between the representatives of the Feilding Debating Society and the representatives of the Young Men's Improvement Society here; subject, « The Accumulation of Large Fortunes." The Manawatu Farmers' Co-operative Association have given three guineas to the Fire Brigade funds in recognition of their efforts at the fire on Sunday morning. They have also presented three men who

had been instrumental in giving tho alarm with a sum of two guineas each. Tho following letter, accompanied by a cheque for three guineas, has been forwarded by Mr M. Cohen to tho Fire Brigade:—"l have much pleasure in conveying tho thanks of the directors to your members for their timely valuable assistance in suppressing the incipient firo on our Church street premises." A deputation, consisting of the Mayor, Mr Wallis (chairman of tho Fitzherbert Road Board), Bir D. Buick (representing the farming interest), and Mr Welch (representing the settlers on the Forest Reserve), will interview tho Minister of Lands to-morrow in reference to tho construction of tho Palmerston-Pahiatua road. Messrs Pirani and Hogg, M's.H.R., have signified their intention of assisting in getting a sum placed on tho Estimates for the carrying out of this work. Several volumes of light literature havo been presented to tho Fire Brigade library by Mr Thos. Wood, and some standard works by tho Rev Father Patterson.
