NATIONAL DAIRY ASSOCIATION.

By Telegrajh. — Press Association. Dunedin, June 7. The annual meeting of the National Dairy Association was held to-day. It was resolved to refer to the Executive, together with Mr Reynolds (Auckland), and Mr Bobbins (Stratford), the defining of conditions on which the North Island factories could join the Association. It was decided to point out that if cold storage is not provided by next season the industry will suffer great loss. It was also resolved that the most modern cool cars for butter should be provided by the Railway Commissioners, and that in the interest of settlement all over New Zealand special facilities in the way of cheap and effective railage for milk and all dairy produce should be provided. The Committee appointed to consider the Dairy Industry Act brought up a report, and it was resolved to recommend that the Act should be amended so as to givo Government inspectors power to mark butter for shipment as bad or adulterated, and that dairy butter mean only butter made and packed at individual farms. A further recommendation was made that the Act be amended so that the power now conferred on inspectors of milk for sale in towns should be extended so as to cover the inspection of all dairies and milk-sheds by stock inspectors. It was resolved that the Association should appoint a committee to endeavour to regulate the price of milk in different districts. Dunedin, June 8. At tho National Dairy Association's meeting it was resolved to accept Mr Bobbins' proposal for the North Island joining with the Association on the lines laid down by him, viz.:— The North Island members to appoint a board of advice, who shall appoint a secretary at Wellington. Messrs Kobbins and Reynolds, and tho secretary were appointed a deputation to wait on the Government and lay before them the views of the Association. It was resolved that if not less than 20 factories join the next meeting of the Association be held in Wellington. The following resolutions were approved without dissent:—(l) That the Association recognise the value of a committee in London to regulate the prices of New Zealand produce, and trust that Mr Reynolds will again do his best in organising such committee; (2) that the Government be requested to re-appoint Mr Lowe or some other expert to report on the shipments, and in tho event of a regulating committee being set up, that he bo requested to work with tho committee ; (3) that the Government be requested to forward Mr Lowe's reports to the secretary of tho Association ; (4) that the gallon of milk be fixed at the Government standard weight, lllbj (5) that the Association issuo quarterly reports to tho associated factories. A motion that the practice of tendering for the making of cheese or butter is prejudicial to the industry was carried witli one dissentient. Mr Bobbins, in acknowledging the courtesy extended to him, said there had been an idea that a little friction would arise between the North and South, but all obstacles had been overcome, and he thought they would now have really a united National Association. Mr Reynolds entirely concurred in this opinion. Mr C. R. Valentine, chief dairy expert, left on Friday, accompanied by Mrs Valentine, in the Tarawera for Auckland, en route to England. We understand that ho has been appointed resident dsxryexpert in England to watch over the Colony's dairy interests there, to open up new markets for our produce, and generally to develop and systematise the trade. Mr Valentine's official report has been sent in, and will be laid before Parliament in due course.
