THE TIMOTHY CASE.

At a meeting of the stewards of the United Hunt Club races, held at the Royal Oak Hotel last week, there was considerable discussion in regard to a request of the Wellington Racing Club that they should make further enquiry into the running of the horse Timothy (by Early Bird) in the Steeplechaso at their last meeting, and in which his rider was alleged to have weighed in 41b under weight. After consideration the following resolutions were proposed and duly passed : 1. That the Wellington Racing Club be informed that the stewards of the United Hunt Club, when considering the conduct of the rider of Timothy in tho Open Steeplechase, were not aware that tho liorso had weighed in light after tho race. 2. That the Stewards were doubtful whether under the Rules of Racing they were entitled to hold an enquiry into (a) tho riding of the hoise, or the conduct of the owner, trainer, or jockey, the stewards having already come to a conclusion upon the matter, and their decision being final according to tho rules; or (b) into any malpractice at tho scales, and into the conduct of tho jockey during tho race as showing whether tho failure to draw tho required weight was accidental or intentional.

3. That the stewards are desirous that if they have powor to hold either or both of the said enquiries to refer such inquiries to tho stewards of tho Wellington Racing Club, and desire them to hold the same ; and that the stewards do hereby request the stewards of tho Wellington Racing Club to hold such enquiries, if they think they have power to do so. 4. That if the stewards of tho Wollington Racing Club hold that the Hunt Club stewards have power to hold such enquiries, and desire them to hold tho samo, the secretary be authorised to give a dato for such inquiry, and summons witnesses.

With regard to the letter forwarded to tho Wellington Racing Club by the stewards of tho United Hunt Club relating to the running of Timothy in tho Open Steeplechase at the last meeting of the Hunt Club, the stewards of tho Metropolitan Club have hold a meeting and discussed tho subject. The result was that they decided to call upon the Hunt Club to make a further investigation into tho running of tho horse in tho event mentioned, holding that they had powor so to do under tho circumstances, which have already been detailed in theso columns, and of which the public are cognisant. They expressed the opinion also that the ovicenco taken at the enquiry on the racecourse into tho running of the horse was relevont to the question as to whether tho weighing in short on tho part of the rider was accidental or wilful. Tho travelling expenses of the witnesses summoned to givo evidence will be paid by the Metropolitan Club.
