AUCKLAND WINTER MEETING. Auckland, June 9. The first day's racing of the Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting was held at Ellerslie to-day. The weather was fine, though the course was very heavy. Lord Glasgow was present. The a+tendanco compared favourably with that of previous years, about 3000 people being present. The sum of .£3909 was put through the machine. Skittles and Ika Vuka drew away, and led by several lengths. Racing into tho straight, Ika Vuka was two lengths clear of Skittles, Melinite being third ; then came Belmont, Fright and Liberator, who was thus early being ridden. Ika Vuka continued his lead, and passing the stand was five lengths in front. Belle fell at the hurdle leading into the straight. Ika Vuka led out of tho straight still fivo lengths clear of Skittles, after whom camo Melinite, Fright and Liberator. Very little change took place until the cutting was reached, when Melinite commenced to make a forward movement, and beforo long had command by two lengths, Belmont and Skittles being her nearest attendants. Entering the straight, Belmont and Skittles began to draw on tho leader, but Hickey giving tho mare her head, she easily drew away and won comfortably by threo lengths. Time, 4min lOsec. Fishmonger and Scaltheen camo to grief at the top of the hill, leaving the running to be carried on by Crazy Kate, Potentate and Bombardier. In the last run down tho hill Bombardier ran into second place, and entering the straight challenged Crazy Kate. They both approached the hurdle in . front of tho Derby stand together, but Bombardier drew away from his opponent after negotiating the obstacle, and won easily by two lengths. Time, 9min 2sec.
