THE TAX DEPARTMENT.
ME McGOWAN APPOINTED COMMISSIONEB. Ministers were in Cabinet during the greater part of Fiiday and up till a late hour at night. The most important business transacted was the appointment of Mr J. McGowan, Deputy - Commissioner of Taxes, as Commissioner in succession to the late Mr Crombie. We feel quite sure that the right man has been secured for the vacancy, and that the news of his appointment will ba received with universal satisfaction. Haying been intimately associated with, Mr Crombie in his administration, he will carry on the work upon the lines so ably developed and laid down by his late chief. Mr McGowan is a very old publie servant, having been in the service for upwards of twenty years. He was formerly chief clerk and accountant in the Treasury, and joined the Property Tax Department as chief clerk when Mr Sperrey was Commissioner. When Mr Crombie succeeded Mr Sperrey upon the hitter's death Mr McGowan became Deputy-Commissioner, He will now control the Department with which he has for so many years been identified. The position of Deputy-Corn* missioner remains open for the present.
