Carterton, June 9. Dr Johnston is training a number of juveniles in the operetta " Red Riding Hood." They will givo a public performance in aid of the Belvedere school shortly. On Wednesday, narrow escapes from fires were experienced by Messrs Hughes (barber) and Trigance (tailor). The lamp of tho former ignited a quantity of fancy paper surrounding it, and some difficulty was experienced in putting it out. Mr Trigance was carrying a lamp, when he fell over some obstacle and an explosion followed. Luckily a lot of loose clothing was lying around and the flames wero mastered in their incipiency. If either of the premises mentioned had boen burned, large blocks of buildings would have been jeopardised. Tho Featherston Highway Board has agreed to co-operate with the TaratahiCarterton Board in repairing the encroachment of tho Waiohino at tho Black Bridge. Mr Hiloy's stables at Tauherenikau wore destroyed by fire on Wednesday night. They were insured in tho National office for Jei2o. It is considered more than probable that the fire was started by an incendiary, as when first discovered the straw in each of the stalls on tho racecourso side were all alight at once. Mr Hans Sydow, an employee at Wakelin's mill, Greytown, had the palm of his hand gashed and two small bones severed through coming in contact with a revolving circular saw, on Wednesday. A " social" in connection with tho Wesleyan Church, on Thursday evening, was a great success. Messrs Williams and Beetham are having their land on tho Taratahi cleared. Manuka, gorse, &c, is being uprooted and burned.

The Railway Department has notified the secretary of the Hunt Club that train arrangements similar to those provided last year will be made for the Steeplechase Meeting on the oth July without guarantee.

The bachelors of Carterton entertained their friends at a ball on Thursday night, which proved a most enjoyable function. Some 50 couples were present. The arrangements were in the hands of a committee consisting of Messrs H. Booth, R. Foss, R. Roake, W. Dudson, G. Taylor, C. Allen, G. Leitchfield and G. Hawthorne. Miss Armstrong contributed the music, and Mr A. L. Why to provided an excellent supper. By the fire which destroyed the school residence at Waihenga Mr Wardlaw, the master, lost a library, uninsured, valuod at .£IOO, and Mrs Wardlaw jewellery to the value of about £3O, also uninsured.

A station employee from Pirinoa named Peter Coupland, died in the Greytown Hospital on Friday from inflammation of the brain.

Mr G. Rutherfurd has won the buggy presented by Mr D. Cameron for prizefiring in connection with the Greytown Rifle Club. Mr F. Burch made the highest score, but was disqualified on a protest for a technical infringement of the rules. Notwithstanding that Saturday was an exceedingly wet day the meet of the Hunt Club, at Tauherenikau, was well attended, and a satisfactory run took place. Several candidates for various events at the Steeplechase Meeting were present to qualify as hunters. June 12. Dr D. J. Insurance Company, has handed over a cheque for £l,lOO, the amount of the insurance on the Club Hotel, Featherston. At a meeting of the householders of Belvedere last night the following school committee was elected : —Messrs li. Butler (chairman), W. Abbott, G. Stevens, W. Andrews, J. Anderson, J. Stevons, M. Gunderso*. A ring-tailed opossum w<i3 killed at Featherston lately. A night iratchman is now employed to keep guard over the inhabitants of Featherston.

A four-roomod cottage, owned by Mr R. Hooker, and tenanted by a bachelor named Clarke, was burned yesterday in the lattor's absence. There was no insurance.

A man named Turley was injured by a log rolling on him at Mr W. Booth's mill on Saturday, and one of his legs, from the hip to the knee, had the skin removed. At a meeting of tho stewards of the Wairarapa Eacing Club at Featherston on Saturday nigkt several accounts were passed for payment. It was resolved to grant leavo to Messrs A. Fabian, K. McKenzie, and C. B. Pharazyn to train on Tauheronikau imder certain restrictions. Messrs Bidwill Brothers' offor to supply horses, ploughs, harrows, scoop, and carts, as well as grass seed, etc., for work on tho new training track, if the Club paid the men's wages at 25s por week, was accepted. A committee was appointed to lay out the track. Messrs Williams, Burt, and Wilkinson also offered carts for work on tho training track, and Mr Wilkinson said he would contribute three guineas towards the work.

A coroner's enquiry was held at Featherston before Mr T. Hutchison, S.M., and a jury of six, touching the burning down of the Club Hotel. Mr Searl, tho lessee, Walter Gresley, Frank Moredith, James Hunter, Josiah Viles, and Albert Vilos gave evidence. Tho inquiry has beon adjourned till Friday. At a meeting of the Taratahi-Carterton Racing Club on Saturday night tho tender of Mr A. M. Browa (£2OO lGs), for the erection of a grandstand, was accepted. Tenders for priyileges at tho Hunt Club Steeplechase Meeting were opened on Saturday, and the following accepted :—Gates, Crawford and Hodder, £2.7 10s; cards, Crawford and Hodder, £l2 10s ; publican's booth, inside and outside, E. J. Searl, £8 and £lO ; horse yards, Grawford and Hodder, £4 ; outside refreshment booth, J. Wickens, £3; inside do. A. Jones, £2 10s; fruit stall, A.
