PALMERSTON NOTES.

Palmerston North, June 7. At a meeting of ratepayers at the Theatre Royal to consider the proposal to borrow .£I6OO for surface drainage, the Mayor, Mr Park, who presided, proposed a motion in favour of the loan. His "VVoiship said that if the loan was carried the Council would not spend tho money if the object aimed at could bo better obtained by joining the .proposed drainage district. Mr F. Pirani, M.H.R., seconded the motion, and strongly supported the loan proposals. An amendment moved by Mr James Linton was lost, and the Mayor's motion was carried by a largo majority. Mr Park said the rato proposed to pay interest on the loan was only 4Jd in tho .£IOO.

The Palmerston Musical Union has decided to suspend operations for twelve months. Messrs Brandon and Crump have been appointed trustees. Tho action brought by Miss Leila Adair against Captain Dunk, of the Manawatu Mounted Rifles, for tho recovery of .£2B ss, was decided yesterday, judgment being I given in favour of Miss Adair.

It is reported that ono Awahuri settler, Mr Briscoe, lost no less than 600 sheep by the late floods. Of this number 400 wero lambs.

Tho swimming baths scheme, which has been for a considerable time iu abeyance, is now likely to be successfully carried out. The question of difference was whether Mr Edwards should 'use more water for the working cf a motor than he required for the baths; and at a meeting of the Council he agreed to have a provision inserted in the agreement that he would only use the water supplied to the baths for working motors. It was decided to charge £3 a year for the water, the price of water for motive power to be 5s per annum.

Mr A. Cook, tho popular relieving oflicer of tho Railway Department, was married at Wanganui on Tuesday to Miss Margaret J. Aiken, daughter of Mr W. Aiken, sen. The Rev James Treadwell celebrated the marriage. The newly-married couple passed through Palmerston to-day on their way to Napier, whore thoy are to spend the honeymoon. A petition is in circulation at Longburn asking tho Railway Commissioners to coaso using tho Longburn station on account of its dangerous and inconvenient position, and shift it about six chains up the line, which would be a decided improvement. Great complaints aro made of the number of packages thrown down on the platforms of side stations along tho Manawatu line. A poll is to bo taken on the loan proposals on Thursday next. If tho loan is not carried, taxation will bo increased, or most of the street works abandoned. Tho public swimming baths are now assured. Mr Edwards has liberal terms from tho Borough Council. A football player has had his collarbone broken while practising on tho Feilding Oval. Mr McKenna, our popular stationmaster, has resumed his duties. Ho has boon recuperating after his illness. Tho repairs to roads and bridges in tho Manawatu road district will, it is estimated, cost over .£ISOO. Complaints are made tha ' tho local police staff is undermanned. At a meeting convened by tho Ratepayers' Association to consider tho borough drainage loan proposals, a motion antagonistic to tho loan was defeated, an amendment in its favour being carried by 20 votes to 14. At tho College-street school yesterday morning, the doors were found thrown open, and it was discovered that ono or two articles had boon abstracted. Mr J. Kebbell, chairman of tho Horowhenua County Council, is laid up with influenza.

The Ratepayers' Association now numbers 120 members.
