LAND SETTLEMENT.
Tho Lands Department intend to invito applications up to tho 18th July for tho lease for 21 years of two small grazing runs in tho Burke District, Mackenzie County, Canterbury. They have a joint area of 2005 acres. They form part of tho original Three Springs and Rolesby Stations.
Tho Marlborough Land Board lias decided to recommend that when any amendment to tho Land Act is brought before Parliament, a clause be inserted reducing tho additional value of improvements to be made within bush lands to six years from date of lease as specified by section 144. The Government intend, if it is practicable to do so, to take a road up to tho Makohine Valley to connect at Ohingaiti, and thus open up a portion of tho Awarua Block.
A party of ten men arrived on Tuesday by tho Omapero from Tiinaru, and having been joined by two men resident hero, the entire party proceeded next morning to Hunterville for the purpose of taking up 1000 acres of land in tho Hautapu Block under the Hon Mr McKenzie's assisted settlement scheme. That is to say, tho men obtain a contract to clear the thousand acres of bush, and then take up the land upon terms which enable them to refund in course of timo the outlay incurred by the Government in clearing the land. The Hautapu Block is situated on the other side of tho Kangitikei River from Ohingaiti. Two of tho men who have come from Timaru have brought their wives and families with them. Tho others will send for thoir wives and their children as soon as they havo erected whares for their accommodation. Ono of tho men was recently appointed to the Commission of tho Peace.
