CHESS IN NEW ZEALAND. A match between the Pahiatua ami Ashurst Clubs, seven men a side, was played at the latter place on Saturday, the 2nd instant, and resulted in a win for Pahiatua by eight games ' to five. Some very tough games were played, Messrs Norton and Sexton being: five hours ovor one, and Messrs Godtschalk and Pleasants Bix hours over another. Subjoined is ouo of the games. Ruy Lopez. White. Black. (Mr T. Sexton, (Mr C. J. Norton, Ashurst.) Pahiatua.) 1 P to K 4 1 P to K 4 2 Kt to K B 3 2 Kt to Q B 3 3 B to Kt 5 3 B to B 4 This defence ia inferior to the more frequently adopted ones of 3 Kt to K B 3, or 3 P to Q R 3. 4 Castles White's best move here is P to Q B 3; tho i line of play adopted is, howovor; quite satisfactory. 4 Kt to B 3 5 P to Q Kt 3 5 Kt to Q 5 Tho capture of the K P would not have improved matters for Black. 6 Kt x Kt C B x Kt 7 P to Q B 3 7 B to Kt 3 8 P to Q 4 8 Kt x P This in too risky, and should givo his opponent tho bettor game. 9 R to K sq 9 P to K B 4 10 P to K B 3 10 P to Q B 3 11 P x Kt Good enough, but we think that we should have preferred 11 B to Q 3. llPxB 12 P x P 12 Castles 13 R x P 13 P to Q 4 14Qt083 lißtoKsq 15 R x P 15 B to Q 2 16 Q to Kt 3 A loss of valuable time. It would have been more commendable if ho had played Q to B 2 at once, and then have proceeded to develop his game as fast as possible. 16 B to B 2 17 Q to B 2 17 Q to K 2 18 B to R 3 18 Q to B 2 19 R x B There is nothing bettor than this, and the position now bocomos verv interesting. 19 Q x R 20 Kt to Q 2 20 B to Q 3 21 B to Kt 2 This retreat is disadvantageous as tho B proves of no more sorvico in the game. To have exchanged B's would havo been less risky. 21 R to K B sq 22 R to K B sq 22 R to B 2 23 Kt to K 4 23 R to K sq | 24 0 to B 3 I Why not 24 Kt to Kt 5, R to B 3; 25 Kt to K 6, followed by P to Q 5 when tho opportunity offered ? Kt x B would have removed the obnoxious Bishop and left an interesting end game. 24 B to K 2 25 P to K Kt 4 25 R to B sq 26 Kt to B 2 20 P to K Kt 3 27 Kt to Q 3 27 B to Q 3 2S Q to Q 5 This must havo been a blunder, as it throws away tho Queen for a minor piece ; but in any case Black is now getiing the better of the contest. 23 B x P ch 29 K x B 29 Q x Q 30 Kt to K 5 30 R to B 3 31Pt084 31PxP 32 P x P 32 Q to Q sq 33 P to Q 5 33 P x P 34 P x P 34 R to R 3 ch 35 K to Kt 2 35 Q to Kt 4 ch 36 K to B 2 36 R x P ch 37 Kt to B 3 37 Q to Q 2 ch Tho game is wound up by Black very creditably. 38 Resigns STEINITZ v. LASKER. Subjoined is the fourth game in the match with notes from the Baltimore News. The additional notes in brackets are from Tho Field. Giuoco Piano. White. Black. (Mr W. Steinitz). (Herr Lasker). IPtoK4 IPtoK4 2 Kt to K B 3 2 Kt to Q B 3 38t084 38t084 4 P to B 3 4 Kt to B 3 SPtoQ4 SPxP 6 P to K 5 6 P to Q 4 7BtoQKt5 7KttoKs BPxP BBtoK2 B to Kt 3 or B to Kt 5 ch is more usual. (B to Kt 3 is the usual and better move here. The bishop keeps a pressure upon White's Q P, whilst the Q Kt, if not taken off, comes into play at K 2, thus allowing tho Q B P to force the centre.) 9 Kt to B 3 9 Castles 10 B to Q 3 10 P to B 4 This reply is tho only ono available. 11 P x P en pass White plays for a K side attack. (Good judgment. The Black Kt could otherwise not be dislodged conveniently. Besides, after 11 Kt x P, the diagonal for tho B at Q 3 becomes clear.) HKtxP(B3) 128t0K3 12KttoQKt5 13 B to Kt sq (A very fine move, the intention being to advance P to Q R 3, and to attack Black's weak Q P. White having time for his manoeuvre shows clearly that Black's retreat to K 2 of tho B was faulty.) 13 Kt to Kt 5 (A blunder which is the cause of all Black's trouble. He evidently overlooked Whito's subtle design in retreating B to Kt sq.) 14 P to Q R 3 (Threatening, if the Q Kt moves, 15 Kt x P). 14 Kt x B (The retreat of the Q Kt boing impossible now, Lasker has to recourse to an ingenious counter-attack, which shows great fertility of resource in trying situations. That the advance of the Q Kt was a blunder is clearly shown now, for his whole line of play could havo been followed with the Q Kt at B 3 still better, for this piece would not then have been en prise, as it is now. The next move* on both sides are all forced.) 15 P x K Kt 15 B to R 5 ch Black, who has apparently misjudged the position, is almost compelled to go in for this brilliant but more than hazardous attack. For if the Kt retreats White plays Kt x P and Black dare not retake. 16 P to Kt 3 If 16 Kt x B, Q x Kt ch; 18 P to Kt 3 best, Q to B 3 with a strong attack. But 16 K to Q 2 was probably better than the text move. 16BtoKt5 17 Castles 17QtoKsq This perplexing little move ia no doubt Black's best chance. 18 P x Kt The greatest players sometimes make the gravest blunders. Mr Steinitz appears to havo been under the misconception that if 18 P x B Black could reply Q to Kt 3,—Either Q to

R 4 or Q x P ch could bo rebutted by K to Kt2. 18 Q to R 4 19 Kt x P Certainly very highly ingenious. 19 R x Kt B x P is tempting, but unsound. 20 Kt to B 4 20 R x Kt (Ho has nothing else. Every move is the best up to now, and subsequently right up to the end game.) 21 Q to Kt 3 ch 21 R to B 2 22 K x R 22 Q x R 23 B to R 2 If 23 B x P ch, K to B sq ; 24 Q x Q ch, K x O : 25 P x B, Black would trap the B by P to K Kt 3. (Bettor than QxQch at onco. Ho gets tho B into a bettor position.) 23tQ x Q 24 B x Q ch 24 K to B sq 25 P x B 25 K to K 2 26 B to Q 5 This is not so good as P to Kt 5. 26 P to B 3 278t0K4 27PtoQR3 28 R to R 5 (P to Kt 5 at once could have boon playod.) 28 P to R 3 29PtoQKt5 298 P xP 30 B x P 30 R to R 2 31 B to B 6 Of course, if 31 B x P, B to B sq. 31 B to Q 2 32 B x B 32 K x B 33 K to B 2 33 K to B 3 34 K to K 2 3-1 K to Kt 3 35 R to R sq 35 P to Q R 4 36 K to Q 3 36 P to R 5 37 P to K 4 37 R to K B 2 38 P to K 5 38 R to B 6 ch I 39 K to K 4 39 R to B 7 40 R to Q Kt sq 40 K to B 3 41 P to Q 5 ch 41 K to Q 2 42 K to Q 4 R to Kt sq would havo cut short Black's most heroic struggles, but was strangely overlooked. 42 R to Q 7 ch 43 K to B 5 44 R to K 7 45PtoK6ch 45KtoQ3 46 R to Q sq 46 R x P ch 47 K x P 47 R x P 48 R to K sq 48 R to R 2 ch 49 K to Kt 3 49 K to E sq 50Kt084 50PtoKt4 51 P x P 51 P x P 52 K to Q 4 52 R to R 5 ch 53KtoQ3 53RtoR6ch Theso chocks are most un-Laskor-liko and the second ono is fatal. RtoK Bsq would have drawn hero. 54 K to K 4 54 P to Kt 5 55Kt085 55RtoRsq 56PtoK7 57PtoKtG 58 K to B 7 58 K to Q 2 59PtoQ6 59PtoKt7 60 R to K Kt sq (In consequence of the mistake in tho c pening tho game took an exceptionally lively turn. It is a curious illustration how a single weak move in the opening alto-is tho shapo of tho wholo game.) 60 Rosigns
