HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.

The Hutt County Council mot on Tuesday. Present—Councillors H. Cook (chairman), J. Wakeham, C. W. Brown, D. Speedy, W. Gillett, F. A. Majendio, H. A, Field, F. Bradev and G. Brown. Mr Davis waited on the Council in reference to the Horokiwi hill road. The matter was left to the inspector. The chairman and clerk were authorised to arrange for the acceptance of a loan of £SOO, ottered by Mr Kniggo, for the protective works at Silvcrstream.

Messrs Robinson and McCros3an requested the Council to aid in clearing a slip on the Hutt-Waikanae road. The inspector is to be asked to report. The Under-Secretary for Lands forwarded copy of agreement providing for the granting of «£SO for constructing a portion of the Hutt-Waikanae road. The agreement is to be signed. A. and'C. Crawford requested that a portion of the roads in the Seatoun road district be maintained. No action was taken.

It was decided to write to the Wellington and Manawatu Company for <£lo towards the construction of Amohia street, Paraparauniu.

Mr Morrison, representing Tuia Tuhata, waited on the Council objecting to the County road having been deviated at Waikauae, and stating that it interfered with his client's comfortable occupation. The matter was left in the hands of Councillor Field.

It was decided to spend no money at present on the County road approach to the Waikanae river.

W. Wiseman applied for a license to slaughter stock on section 07, block 1., Rimutaka, and forwarded a li3t containing the names of 13 ratepayers in the immediate vicinity who had no objection. Mr Bunny objected on behalf of J. Wiseman, stating that his trade would be interfered with and a nuisance might be caused. The license was granted. J. Jameson, James and Joseph Fletcher, and J. J. Burn petitioned the Council regarding the bad condition of Ilorokiwi hill road. No action was taken.

The Inspector is to advertise that all persons slaughtering cattle for profit without a license will be prosecuted. The Makara Road Board requested the Council to forward the amount of rates collected in its district after deducting therefrom its proportionate share of the cost of general management and hospital and charitable aid contributions, and its share of the dog tax for 1893 and 1894. It was resolved that an amount equivalent to a farthing in tho pound on rates

collected in Makara be handed to the Makara and Seatoun Boards. The Under-Secretary for Lands wrote requesting to be furnished with an estimate and details of county roads which the Government was asked to aid in constructing. It was decided to ask tho inspector to send a tracing and rough estimate per mile to tho Under-Secretary. The seal of the Council is to be affixed to the deed of agreement with reference to Silverstream breakwater. The Inspector of Roads furnished his usual report. Tho principal work done on tho roads was metalling soft places and filling in ruts. He had visited the Oroua, Kiwitea and Pohangina rivers in tho Manawatu district and tho Waiohine in tho Wairarapa, and inspected tho various protective works done there. Tho most effective, to his mind, were those of the Pohangina and Waiohine rivers, and ho proposed to use a combination of both in tho proposed, works at Silverstream. He suggested using condemned railway rails for piles instead of timber. The contractor for No. 1 contract, Akatarawa road, had abandoned his contract, and Messrs George Morgan and Sons were completing the work. Tho amount of rates received during the month was £l2l 2s 9d. The report was adopted. Requests re transfers of properties in rate books sent in since last meeting are to be given effect to. It wjls decided to strike a general rate of fd and a separate rate of ]d for the Whareroa, Horokiwi, Porirua, Belmont, Epuni, Mungaroa, and Wainui-o-mata Ridings, and a separate general rate of 4d for tho Makara Riding, payable on the 14th July. The hours of labour of employoes were fixed from 8 to 5 on ordinary days, and from to 8 to 1 o'clock on Saturdays. Two tenders for No. 3 contract, Akatarawa road, were received, but neither were accepted. The Chairman and Councillor Speedy, and the Inspector were abked to wait on the Lands Department asking that the work on No. 3 length (Hutt-Waikanae) be, undertaken by day labour in place of contract labour.

Accounts amounting to JG525 5s lOd were passed for payment.
