A conference of delegates of tho whole of the northern County Councils, held at Whangarei, near Auckland, resolved to recommend that subsidies and grants to local bodies be paid in the spring, instead of in the winter; that the amount of the subsidy be increased from 10s to 20s for every pound of rates collected; that the Government bo requested to get tho law relating to local bodies so amended that tho subsidy be paid on the amount of rates received, not on the amount collected by the Road Boards. Mr Thomas Ward has been appointed Deputy-Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths for Patea district.
