EDUCATIONAL.

EDUCATION BOARD. ♦► The monthly meeting of the Wellington Education Board was held on Wednesday. Present:—Messrs J. R. Blair (chairman), J. Young, W. W. McCardle, F. H. Frascr, F. Bradey, W. A. Fitzherbert and W. C. Buchanan, M.H.R. MR WEBB'S APPOINTMENT. The Chairman, referring to a letter which had appeared in tho New Zealand Times regarding the inconsistency of the Board in appointing Mr Webb to the Kaiwaiwai school, said there was no inconsistency about their action whatever. There wero no applicants for the post from among teachers in the Board's employ, and Mr Webb, being tho best qualified of those who did apply, was appointed accordingly. "AS YOU LIKE IT." With regard to tho letter from the Newtown School Committee to the Board on " As You Like It/' the Chairman referred to a complaint made by tho chairman of the committee that tho Board had published tho letter, which was of a confidential nature. Mr Blair said there was nothing on the face of it to show it was confidential. It was headed " Newtown School Committee," addressed to the secretary of the Board, and signed by the chairman of tho committee. WAQIUNGA SCHOOL. Tho committee appointed to report on differences existing between the Waihunga Committee and tho teacher reported that there was no doubt the want of harmony between the parties must affect the education of the children, but as the friction in no way reflected on the conduct of the teacher from an educational point of view, the committee recommended that he be transferred to a post of similar value as soon as opportunity occurred. Tho report was adopted. NEW SCHOOLS. A petition was received for a school at Kuku, near Manakau. The Chairman said tho place was within two miles of two different schools, and the school at Ohau was shortly to be enlarged and improved. Tho application was declined on the ground that there is ample school accommodation already in tho district. The question of providing assistance for the building of a new school at Grassendale was left in the hands of the chairman, with power to act. THE TEACHING STAFF. The resignations of Miss Fanny Jordan (Waihinga) and Miss Ida Batten (Otaki) were accepted. Miss Beech was appointed a sewing teacher to Ohariu, and Mrs John Stewart to a similar position at Mangamahoe. Inspector Fleming wrote recommending Mr E. Samuel as ex-pupil teacher instructor at Clyde quay, at a salary of .£35, in which recommendation Inspector Lee concurred. The appointment was made as recommended. Miss Lucy Colwell was appointed pupil teacher at Hawera. Tho Tenui Committee were authorised to appoint a pupil teacher. Miss Alice Cook was appointed pupil teacher at Wadestown, and Miss M. Fellingham at Waihinga. The appointment of a pupil teacher at Taueru was left in the hands of tho chairman. An application for the transfer of Miss Braithwaite from Clareville to Greytown was acceded to. Tho Board agreed to the request of the Makakahi Committee to appoint Mr Britland to that school. The Te Aro School Committee wrote urging that Mr Cole should receive some suitable appointment in consideration of his long services. The Board decided to consider Mr Colo's case when an apportunity occurred. The Pahiatua School Committee forwarded a resolution asking that the Board would remove Mr C. W. Lee from the headmastership of the school on the ground of alleged friction between him and the other teachers. Mr McCardle moved that a committee be appointed to go to Pahiatua and investigate the circumstances, consisting of the Chairman, Mr Fraser, Mr Bradey and himself. This was seconded by Mr Buchanan, and carried. The committee pay their visit on May 3rd next. Miss McKenny, of Pahiatua, was granted leave, of absence on account of sickness. AN EXPRESSION OF THANKS. The Chairman read a letter from the secretary of the Greytown School Committee thanking the Board for the promptness shown in complying with their request to make certain additions to the school. The letter was received and favourably commented upon. DRAINAGE. The Resident Drainage Engineer wrote asking the Board to arrange for the separation of the storm water from the sewage in connection with the drainage of the Thorndon School. Tho chairman was authorised to act in the matter. OTAKI. The chairman was authorised to take the necessary steps to dispose of the school site at Otaki, which is no longer required. ! Mr D. M. Yates (Otaki) asked that certain alterations and repairs should be made to his residence. The Board decided that tenders shoukl be called for the whole school property at Otaki. The Board went into committee, and on resuming accepted the tender of Mr M. Murdoch for the work at the Otaki School. The other tenderers were: Messrs J. Edwards, Smith and Snooks, Spurney, Brooks, J. and N. Wilson, D. McLean, J. Eussell, and Miller Bros. REPAIRS AND ALTERATIONS. Certain repairs required at Pahautanui were ordered to be made by the Board's caipenter. For the extension of a classroom at Greytown, the tender of Mr H. Trotman was

accepted. Mr E. B. Hawkins was the other tenderer. MISCELLANEOUS. Tho pay sheet, amounting to .£3608 19s 2d, was passed for payment. An application for furniture for tho head teacher's room at Masterton was declined, there being no funds available. Tho chairman was authorised to aftix the seal of the Board to the lease of the Sydney street site. A letter was read from the Education Department, asking the Board to allow their secretary to receive payment in advance from teachers for Webster's International Dictionary, which the Department were supplying at £2 for a limited period, the published price being £3 3s. The Board acceded to the request. The request of tho Dalofield Committee for a now pump was acceded to, and £b was granted to the Kaituna Committee for a new fence.
