RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

FOXTON RACES. By Telegraph.—Special Reporter. Foxton, April 18. The weather was fine for tho Foxton races, and there was a good attendance, including a great many visitors. The course was in splendid order for racing. The officials worked hard to ensure the * Success of the gathering, and tho meeting passed off pleasantly. Mr E. Gilpin, of Napier, acted as starter, and gave every satisfaction. The Feilding band discoursed music during the day. Tho totalisator was worked by Mr F. Hill, and a capital lunch was provided by Mr Border. The proceedings opened with a good finish in the Flying Stakes, when Kalmea, who could have been ridden more determinedly, suffered defeat by a nose at tho hands of Roll Call, who appeared to bo out of it at the bend. Sydney fell just after starter sent them away, and his rider had a lucky escape. There was nothing in the Hurdle Race but Lonely, the race proving un exercise canter for him. The 36 who backed Karamea had no run for their money hardly, for ho jumped over the fence which bounds the course. Four comprised the field for the Autumn Handicap, which resulted in a surprise, Kalmea, who got beaten in the first race, coming at the right time and winning easily, paying .£ll 14s. Swift was a red-hot favourite, but had to be content with second honours. There were only two starters for the Electric Handicap of five furlongs, but it was a good. race. Pihanga got in front in the w*ltraight, but Tamarere responded to the whip and got home by a neck. There were only 22 investors on the machine and the winner paid ,£3 6s. Trickery was made a hot ♦ivourite for the Welter Handicap, and on public form it was a moral for her. She waited on Tenby until the bend was wvched, when she came away and won x *<isily without the whip, paying .£1 6s. TTimau was the only defection from the ♦UfiwardY Stakes Handicap, which resulted to a win for Pihanga, who beat Swift and rour others comfortably. The jockey of S-rift broke his whip during the race j ntherwise, he might have made it more interesting. Dr Bennett's mare paid .£5 10s. For the last race of the day, the Awahou Stakes, six faced the starter. All the contestants were very green. The winner tturned npin a chestnut mare named Silver, who paid her backers three guineas. Mr Gilpin was cheered for his excellent starting. Lady Clare went to the front, and led past the stand, but Pihanga soon went through the field, and at the bend was in front. She was never afterwards headed, and won comfortably. Jones) 3 Also started —34 Amelia, 21 Comfort, 0 Milford. There was a beautiful start. Comfort went eff to the front, followed by Silver, and at the back the field tailed off considerably. Silver passed Comfort at the bend, and won easily. Time, lmin 54 3-ssec. Dividend, .£3 3s. TROTTING MEETING AT AUCKLAND. Auckland, April 21. The annual meeting of the Onslow Trotting Club was held to-day at Potter's paddock. The Handicap Maiden Trot was won by Nat, who paid £ I 10s. Maxim won the Handicap Maiden Pony Race, the dividend being £2 os. For the Onslow Trot Handicap, two miles and a quarter, there were ten starters, and Peggy Avon by four lengths, Ruby being second, and Mount third. The dividend was «£ll lis. In the Onslow Stakes Handicap The Dove won after a splendid race, Gillie second, and La Grippe third. The dividend was £1 Bs. The Novel Trot Handicap was won by Gwendoline. Dividend, c£3 4s.
