COUNTRY DEPUTATIONS.

A deputation from the Hutt County Council, consisting of Councillors Cook (chairman), Speedy and Brown, and the Road Inspector, was introduced to the Minister of Lands on April 18 by Dr Newman, M.H.R. They asked for a small grant of money towards completing the Akatarawa ro&d between the Upper Hutt andWaikanae. There was only a short gap remaining to enable through communication to be opened up, and .£75 would cover the cost. Would the Government contribute a portion of this money ? The Minister asked how much the Council was prepared to give towards it; to which the deputation replied .£25. They thought the Government might find the rest. The Minister promised to consider the matter and to forward a reply shortly. Messrs John and Edward Till, Charles Williams, George Brown, J.P., and Cruickshank waited on the Minister for Justice to urge that arrangements might be made to hold a Court fortnightly at the Upper Hutt.

Mr T. M. Wilford, who introduced the deputation, said that there was a fortnightly Court at the Lower Hutt, but it was inconvenient for settlers of the Upper Hutt and adjacent districts to travel there. Mr Martin, S.M., was willing to hold a Court out there. There would be no expense involved. The Minister said that if Mr Martin found he could hold a Court fortnightly at the Upper Hutt he could see no objection, but he would make no promise till he had consulted him.

The same deputation waited upon the Postmaster-General and asked for the opening of a telephone station at the Upper Hutt; also that the " old stockade/' used lately as a store, should be set apart for the purposes of a Court-house. Mr Brown said that some 1600tol800people would be served by a telephone from the Lower to the Upper Hutt, and that people sometimes died before medical assistance could be procured in time owing to the want of a telephone. The residents would give a reasonable guarantee. Mr Ward promised to have the whole matter enquired into during the week. As to giving the use of the " stockade " for the purposes of Court sittings, he saw no reason why the Justice Department should not be allowed the use of the building. h
