Hon Treasurer —Mr C. W. Tringham. Hon Secretary —Mr H. McCardell.

The tenth meeting under the auspices of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club, on the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon, was in every respect a great success. The weather was everything that could be desired, the breeze being light and the sun’s rays not too hot, the fields were large and the attendance was well up to the average, about 1000. people being on the ground during; the afternoon. The track, which had. been carefully prepared by W. Frith,, was, in good going order, and some very fail' times were registered, although nothing sensational was put up in this respect. The Maiden Race and 100yds Handicap were won by Larkin, and Bullock came in first in the 120yds Junior Handicap. The Mile Handicap resulted in a dead heat between Morpeth, who started from scratch and Angell (30yds). Morpeth’s timek throughout the race were: —First quarter, 6.4 sec; half-mile, 2min 12sec ; threequarters, 3min 30sec ; mile, 4min 42 2-5 sec. The standard time for the whole distance is 4min 45sec. Both the Mile, Two Mile and Three-mile Bicycle Handicaps fell to Lucy, who started from scratch in each event. Riding a very light machine,, the races were what is commonly known as; a “ moral ” for him from the start, and he had not the slightest difficulty in passing" his men just when he thought fit to do so. The Ladies’ Bracelet fell to Wynyard, whose football experience enabled him to get through the throng in capital style. The handicapping was, with perhaps the exception of the bicycle events, very satisfactory, and produced some really good finishes. . The various officials worked hard to ensure the success of the meeting and each event was got off' with praiseworthy punctuality. It should, however, be mentioned that scarcely sufficient time was

allowed to elapse between the sprint races, the result being that some of the competitors who took part in more than one event did not get a sufficient interval of rest after running one heat before they weie called to the post to start in another. This should be remedied at future meetings. The Garrison Band played a good selection of music during the afternoon. Tea, kindly furnished by the President (Mr H. D. Bell), was provided for visitors in a spacious marquee on the ground. The following are the results of the events: —

THE CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS. There was a large attendance on the Basin Eeserve on the 6th to witness the running of several of the Amateur Athletic Club’s championships. The rain had made the track rather heavy, and consequently the time, with the exception of Morpeth’s in the three miles was not good. Morpeth beat the standard time for the distance (16min) by lsec, and seeing that the ground was in such an unfavourable state, his performance must be considered a brilliant one. He ran splendidly throughout, his fine style being the subject _of general admiration, and at the conclusion of the race he was enthusiastically cheered by the spectators. Wynyard won the 250 yds and Stuart the half-mile, both men running well; Mr J. M. King officiated as starter, Messrs Davis and Knapp as judges, and Mr L. Tripp as referee. The details of the various events are as follow: — 250 Yards. W. T. Wynyard ... ... 1 A. M. Stuart 2 L. Harley 3 These were the only starters. Harley got the best of the start, and led for a short distance, but he was soon replaced by Wynyard, who, running strongly to the finish, won by about 4yds, Stuart just beating Harley for second place. The latter’s running was disappointing. Time, 29 2-ssec. Private watches gave the time as 28 2-ssec. Hurdles. F. Pownall 1 E. Gore 2

G. Johnston, who also started, led at the start, but after about 100yds had been covered Pownall took the lead, and maintained it to the finish, E. Gore making a great effort to catch him in the last 40yds. Gore finished about syds behind the winner. Johnston gave up before reaching the winning post. Time, 66 3-ssec. Three Miles. C. D. Morpeth 1 C. W. Palmer 2 G. S. Hill and. Lawlor also started. The crack long distance runner took the lead soon after starting, and running along in grand style, left his opponents far behind. Lawlor retired at th<? end of the third lap, and Hill gave up after going about two miles. ' 'The latter, however, did not leave the track, but walked on until the last lap, when he made the pace for Morpeth. The latter finished with a great spurt, and just succeeded in beating the standard time by lsec, his time being lomin 59see- He covered the first mile in smin Bsee, the second in smin 29sec and the third in smin '22sec. Palmer finished about 600yds behind Morpeth. Half-mile. A. M. Stuart 'J G. N. Goldie -2 F. Harley ... 3 I H. G. Anderson and F. Pownall also ran. Goldie, who got slightly the best of the start, led for the first quarter of a mile, the others being in a bunch. Goldie kept the lead, and looked like winning until about forty yards from home, when Stuart came with a rush, and, outpacing Goldie, won by about three yards, Harley being a few* yards behind Goldie. Time, 2min ,, The committee of the Wellington Cycling Club have decided to postpone the championship road race which was set down for Saturday next. This was considered necessary in consequence of the fact that several competitors, who are also members of the artillery, would have been unable to attend, as Colonel Fox’s inspection of artillery is to take place that day.
