A sheriff who was distraining for rent discovered a box of dynamite with a fuse attached in a house at Hampstead. The tenant was a man named Schneider, who had recently arrived from America. The Appeal Court has decided that the insurance companies must pay in full on bank deposits insured by them, without allowing for the dividends that may be paid when the affairs of the bank are liquidated. LAWSUIT AGAINST TRUSTEES. London, December 5. The trustees in the estate of the late Mr Justice Kerferd invested the sum of £BSOO in the stocks of certain banks which have undergone reconstruction. The estate is liable for £SOOO in calls. Action has been taken to compel the trustees to pay the calls, it being alleged that they did not exercise proper discretion in investing. The presiding Judge held that the trustees had acted honestly, and therefore were not liable. THE PRIVY COUNCIL. London, December 5. The Duke of Coburg (Prince Alfred of Edinburgh) has resigned his seat in the Privy Council. LIQUOR LEGISLATION IN NEW SOUTH WALES. Sydney, December 6. Mr Kidd has again re-introduced the Local Option Bill. It has been decided by 47 to 35 to retain the compensation clause.

SENTENCED FOR EMBEZZLEMENT. Sydney, December 6. Davis, an accountant who was charged with embezzling £3OOO belonging to a local firm, was sentenced to three years’ penal servitude, and ordered to pay a fine of £IOOO out of the estate. MR GLADSTONE AND THE UNEMPLOYED. London, December 6. Mr Gladstone has declined to agree to a temporary reduction of the eight hours principle in the Government departments in the interest of the unemployed.
