MASTERTON.
The general election, with all its excitement, and bustle is over, and Mr A. W. Hogg has been again returned to the House as the member for Masterton, with a larger majority than ever. The victory was a most decisive one, and plainly indicated the feeling of the majority in the district.
A considerable quantity of rain has fallen lately, in fact rather more than needed, as some of the more forward crops have been beaten down. Still it has freshened up the feed all round, and even if the rest of the summer is dry, there is not likely to be any scarcity. Shearing is well advanced, and the larger portion of the wool has been forwarded to the port of Wellington.
The election of Mayor of Masterton resulted in the return of Mr George Heron, who defeated Mr A. W. Renall by a substantial majority, although not much interest was taken in the matter. Mr Heron is an old councillor, and a vacancy has occurred by his election as Mayor. The.probable candidates for his seat will be Messrs C. Hughes and C. E. Daniell.
The Holloway Dramatic Company caneluded a season of four nights in Masterton on Friday last. The company is a powerful one, and was very well received here.
A number of friends and supporters of Mr J. G. Harkness met at the Temperance Hall on Thursday afternoon last, to bid him farewell, and to thank him for contesting the seat. A bouquet of flowers accompanied by an expression of sympathy and regret at his defeat, was handed to him by the Secretary of his ladies’committee. ! Mr Harkness replied at some length, briefly running over the past election and the lesson it afforded, particularly as regards the necessity of thorough organisation. Excellent nominations have been received for the Boxing Day Meeting of the Masterton-Opaki Jockey Club, and the stewards are looking forward to a big day’s sport.
A great Liberal demonstration is being arranged for Wednesday, December 6th, in honour of Mr A. W. Hogg’s return to Parliament. The Hon the Premier and several prominent Liberal M.H.R.’s are expected to be present. The business of the Wairarapa Farmers’ Co-operative Association still continues to grow, and the directors have just decided to add to the buildings at Masterton and Pahiatua. At Masterton a bulk store 100 x 44 feet is to be erected, on the principle of a railway goodshed.
