NEW ZEALAND. Jas. Kean has just tok&ajn a very promising two-year-old by ~"C3ptivator.— Amohia. Among the most promising two-year olds at Ellerslie is the filly Formee by Nordenfeldt—Formo. George Wright has her in hand, and is rapidly getting her into condition, evidently with a view to early spring engagements. Lady.Motii.by St Leger— Titania, who is in training' at Kohimarama under the care of Fred Stenning, and Doris by St Leger—Ophelia, (by Musket), who is in French's custody at Papakura, are two other highly spoken of Auckland fillies. Mr Friedlander's two brood mares recently purchased in Australia, arrived at Dunedin by the Mararoa at the beginning of last week. One of them, named Teaze, is by The Marquis from Fly,' and the other in a three-year-old by Calma from Essie. L /.Spectator'in the Referee selects Hippomenes, Bst 31b, ior the Dunedin Birthday Handicap; Wakawatea, 9st 21b, for-the. Tradesmen's Handicap ; and Magpie, list 131 b, and The Idler for' the Hurdle Race; His selection of /The Idler must be a slip, as the horse has not accepted, and curiously enough in the same paragraph in which the selection is made he refers to The Idler and flarkaway being badly treated by the handicapper. ; Referring to the unpaid forfeits due to the C.J.C. in connection with the First Challenge Stakes ' Spectator ' says :—One of the nominators whose name appears in the Forfeit Li6t has been obliged to call a meeting of, his creditors, arid the, Canterbury Jockey Club will probably 'haye : to follow the horges for their money, and the same course may have to be adopted in the case of a nomination made by the New Zealand ftud and Pedigree which was wound up, I believe, sometime ago. In another case there is s^ine,.doubt as to ownership, the horse ha.v^gti.'been sold in Australia, while in the only/other case it is understood that the nominator, though responsible, sold without •ob%ping the neces sary transfers. that the C.J.C. will come ,pfuV \t'jtn^ ( losing any of the forfeit money r Clanranald is again doing regular exercise with the rest of, the Middleton team. H. Cusdin's term of disqualification, imposed by the V.R.C., having expired, he was seen in the saddle at Ashburton last Wednesday, having the mourit' t on Cajolery in the Ashburton Autumn. Handicap. TheHawke's Bay correspondent of the Referee refers to the nominations received for the Hawke's Bay Jockfey Club's Winter Meeting. It augurs well for the jumping season to see so many nicely-bred ones put to the illegitimate game, and the present indications are that the lovers pf thi3 branch of sport will see some excellent contests during the next three months. Better quality all-round has never been represented in either hurdle "or steeplechase events. :'■••>• S. Kingan has gone into the service of Mr G. G. Stead and is schooling several of the Yaldhurst team over hurdles. : , One of these is Hybrid, the stoutly-built son of Le Loup and Lady Emma.
