DISTRICT JOTTINGS.

Rangipuhi, the winner of the Thompson Handicap, is being treated toa well-deserved spell, and will not be raced again until the spring. Manine was scratched for the Egmont Steeplechase owing to having struck himself badly in a gallop a few days before. Potto hopes to have him all right for Wanganui. Very general sympathy is felt for the misfortune that has befallen the two young trainers Hilder and James, lessees of the stables belonging to Mr G. W. smart, which were burnt down at the Hutt last Saturday night. Their whole belongings, including clothes, harness, and chattels of every description, were reduced to ashes, and the two young men are left- empty-handed to start the world again. Donald Dinnie, one of the horses destroyed, was engaged in the Hurdle Race at the Otaki Maori Meeting. The Australasian of the 6th inst contains a very complimentary paragraph on the subject of the Otaki Maori Racing Club, the programme of whose Queen's Birthday Meeting has been received by ' Ribbleden.' Mr Wilson's Le Grand, who was hurt at the Wellington Autumn Meeting and has been staying at the Hutt, has been taken back home to his owner s place in the Rangitikei. He looked in very poor condition when he went away, and it is said he has been very much neglected. The following corrections in the weights for the Otaki Maori Meeting are forwarded to'us by the secretary of the club :~ Pill's weight in the Glasgow Plate should be 9st 71b, and in the Flying Stakes May Pair and Tim Pippin should be 6at 71b each. i The privileges in connection with the Otaki Maori Racing Club were sold on Friday and realised as follows :—No. 1 grandstand publican's bar, Ll 5 10a; No. 2 publican's bar, L 3 10s; No. 1 grandstand refreshment booth, L2 15s; No. 2 refreshment booth, Lsj fmit'stall, L 3 15s ; outer gate, L 32 ; correct cards, L 9 ; grandstand entrance, L 36 ; making a total of LlO7 10*. Acceptances for the following i aces close on Wednesday:— Trial Handicap, First Hurdles, Glasgow. Plate, Flying, Stewards' Stakes and Boyle Plate. Owing to the unfortunate delay in the arrival of the trophy forming part ;i ,pf the prize in the Wellington Cup, the committee of the Wellington Racing Club, some time ago',' offered Mr F. Martin, the owner of the winner, a certain sum of money in lieu of the trophy,, and their offer was accepted. The 'cup/' which came to hand on the arrival-fit the Tonic the other day, will, now be tela*"over for next season, whenlt willWpreseriJied to the winner immediately after the race, as was done in 1892, when Mr Hunter won it. Inconsequence of the accident to the lonic an average levy of 23 per cent has been made on all cargo, and this has been paid by the Wellington Racing Club on the trophy, but the amount will be recovflrable from the office it was insured with in London. The 'cup'will remain in its case as it hasjarrived until about a month before the next Wellington Summer Meeting, when it will be placed on view in somei prominent position; : ' '. Mr E. 0. White, the new caretaker of the W utt racecourse, arrived in town on Friday last from Sandon, where he has resided for some time, and has entered upon his new duties.
