It cost about L 3,000,000, was commenced in April, 1883, and opened by Prince of Wales, March, 1890. The longest bridge in America is. Brooklyn Bridge, which was commenced under the direction of J. Roebling in 1870, and completed in about thirteen yearß. It is 3,475 feet long, and 135 feet high. The gigantic structure over the St Lawrence, near Montreal, which, like Britannia bridge over Menai Strait, is a tubular structure, is called the Victoria Bridge. The total length of the tube, which is divided into 24 spans, is nearly two miles The ill-fated Tay Bridge was at the time of its destruction the largest iron bridge in the world, its total length from shore to shore being 10,320 feet.
