SUICIDE AT SEA.
It was reported on the arrival of the Wokatipu from Sydney on Monday that & pasaengar named Charles Abernethy had oommitted Buioide by jumping overboard. The purser gives the following report : At 11.35 p. m, on the 9th instant, about 50 miles from Sydney Heads, a steerage paeBenger named Charles Abernethy jumped overboard nnd was lost. The fbip was stopped, patent lifebuoys were thrown over, and a boat in charge of the second efficer was speedily sent to the rescue. The life, buoys were picked op, but there was no sign of the unfortunate man. After waiting about for an hour and a half tfce ship proceeded on her journey. The weather at the time was light N.E. winds with moderate easterly swell. The unfortunate man's wife was also a passenger, and says bo bad all his money on him, leaving her destitute. A subscription was made 00 board on her behalf by the passengers, officers and cwiw, , and a considerable amount was collected.'
The deceased was a native of Perth, Scotland, and was about 40 years of age. He leaves no children.
