As will be seen by an announcement in another column, we have decided to keep open the Prize Suggestion Competition until Tuesday the 16th inst. The result of the competition will be announced next week. For this usue of the Mail we have had reprinted the account of the late Premier's career, and the report of the fvneral. The Mail was completely sold out last week, and a very large number of copies of this week's issue have been already ordered. Elsewhere will be found some very beautiful verses on the death of the late Mr Ballance. They are from the pen of a well-known Wanganui lady, and came too late for insertion in the Ballance Memorial Supplement.

Mrs Ballance has vacited the Ministerial residence in Tinakori road. The sum of Ll3O, the result of the late" bazaar, was handed over by Miss Holmes towards the building fund of the New Zealaud Academy of Fine Arts. It is rumoured that Mr R. C. Kirk, Mayor of Petone, will oppose Dr Newman at the general election. William Collard has furnished the Official Assignee with a statement of the causes of his bankruptcy, From August 1889 till August 1890 he was employed as railway porter at 5s 6d a day, but at the lattor date (five months after his marriage) he was thrown out of work and remained unemployed until March 1891, when he obtained ctsunl railway work at 7s a day. It only lasted till the end of the month, and he then remained idle till August 1891, when he was appointed relieving railway porter (casual) at 6s 6d a day. This kept hi.n in employment till May, 1892, when his services were no longer needed. As this work had kept him moving about from station to station he had had to pay for separate board for himself and wife. In November last he got work on the Manawatu Company's railway at 7s a day. Sicknees in his family and frequent spells of enforced idleness had brought about the insolvency and the pressure of creditors for payment of their debts had obliged him to file. We understand that the Free Public Library will be opened on Sundays, as soon as satisfactory arrangements can be made for that purpose.

Congratulatory letters continue to pour in upon the Hon Mr Seddon. Amongst the last batch is one from a lodge of Good Templars at Auckland.
