NAUTICAL EXAMINATIONS.

TO THK EDITOR.

Sir,—As the present system of examinations does not eeeo>, to givo satisfaction, might I offer "ft suggestion tni the new Minister for Marine'and advise him to carry out the original idea of his predecessor, the tion Mr Seddon, now Premier. There is no reason, whatever, why one capable man should not not as examiner for the whole Colony, holding periodical examinations at the principal ports as follows:—Say : First week of January, April, July, October, at Auckland; first week of February, May, August, November, at Dunedin ; first week of March, June, September, December, at Lyttelton. He will thus be nearly three weeks of every month in Wellington, where any officer at any of the other ports who could not wait for the periodical viait could proceed to be examined. Such an examiner would also be available and invaluable as a nautical assessor, as from bis independent, position he would be totally unbiassed, and would effeotnally put a stop to any ohanoe of a repetition of such a farce as was enacted at the enquiry into the loss of a large steamer which was wrecked on the ooaat not many months ago. The department would then have uniformity, not only in its examinations, but in its enquiries as well. Of course such a man must have considerable experience, but I am sure there are plenty able and willing to undertake tho duties, provided a salary suitable to the position is offered. — I am, &0., Mbkcator. Wellington, 3rd May, 1893.
