WANGANUI.

Max O’Rell amused and entertained us considerably during the two evenings upon which he lectured, and besides affording thorough enjoyment, left behind him a thoroughly good reputation as a keen observer and kindly critic. The Harbour Board election afforded some excitement, and the result was rather a surprise, inasmuch as our worthy exMayor, Mr A. J. Parsons, and one of the most popular townsmen, occupied the lowest position, those returned being Messrs J. Stevenson, T. Thatcher, A. Hatrick, and T. AVixcey. The Art Master (Mr D. Blair) has just received for the AVanganui Technical School a shipment of plaster casts ordered some months ago from England, and most certainly they reflect highly on his taste and discernmpnt.' The school is very popular, and the number of pupils daily on the increase.

A man named Michael Crane, living with his mother and sister on the outskirts of the town attempted suicide on Thursday by gashing his throat with a razor. Although a quantity of blood was lost, no serious results are anticipated, the wound being properly attended to at the hospital. Artesian well-boring is now proceeding at the Collegiate School, and as soon as operations are concluded Mr Gilberd takes up a contract to bore for water at the Longburn Freezing AVorks. The very many friends and well-wishers of the Premier will be pleased to learn that the Hon Mr Ballance is progressing most satisfactorily in health and strength, and is receiving considerable benefit through the massage treatment. The AVanganui Sash aud Door Factory Co., afforded a very pleasant outing to their employees during the week by engaging the steamer AVairere and taking them and their families on an up-river excursion. The boat was crowded with excursionists, and a thoroughly pleasurable day was spent. Splendid entries have been received for the Brunswick sports on Thursday, and the same may be recorded for the Amateur Athletic Club’s gathering on Saturday next. This latter club is growing in popular favour and promises ere long to be not only numerically strong but has on its roll some first-class athletes. Mr E. Tennyson Smith is prosecuting his temperance mission here just now. There is some talk of putting off the Amateur Regatta until Thursday, March 2nd, instead of the date arranged, Tuesday, February 28th. The reason is that it is thought that Thursday, being the usual half holiday, will find more favour with shop-keepers and lead to a bigger gate.

Residents in the country would study their interests by sending to the New Zealand Mail office for their printing. All goods sent post free by roturn of post. The cheapest and best printing in Wellington.
