The seoond round of the Now Zealand Champion Chess Congress waa opened at 10 a.m. to-day, when play began at throe boarda, Messrs Hookbam and Wood and Maura Milner and Eyre agreeing to poatpooo \ their play till later ia tho day. Mr Siedoberg had tho move in hla game with Mr Jowitt, and played tha Roy Lopes opening. Mr Jowitt got Into a cramped position while hiegime waa in an undeveloped etato. About the 12th move hla opponent began a strong attack, and prevented him from oastling. On tho 28th move tho Dunedln player won • pleoe. He followed op bis advantage vigorously, and on the 47th. move effected a very pretty mate. Mr Cleland played the Ray Lopei opening in his game with Mr Tait. A aeries of exchanges rasnlted ia his winning • paws. Both players played carefully, bat Mr Cleland retained hia extra pawn, and Mr Tait resigned on tbe 42nd move. Mr Sexton played the Rny Lopez opening against Mr Barnes. Bo missed the opportunity of winning a piece on the 17th move, and on the 29th made a weak move, wbiob enabled Mr Barnea to force the game. The pushed his advantage, winning three pawns,H and on tbe Slat move Mr Sexton resigned, jjM Later. !^H At the Chess Congress, Mr Hook ban; opeuedwith the ginoco piano in bis game _ with Mr Wood.
