MUSIC.

THE CHAMBER CONCERTS.

On Saturday afternoon tho first of the aeries of concerts of ohamber musio was given at the Dresden Company’s Hall, under the patronage of Lady Glasgow. ThW 1 ’ series has been projected by Messrs RL Parker and A. F. Hill, whose intention it if to supply tho musical public with somethinjlin the nature of the aelebrated Saturday and Monday popular concerts which are so sue* cessful in London. Examples of the great . works of the masters are given periodically by the Orchestral and Harmonic Societies of ; the place, but the field of chamber musio' so rich in beautiful compositions is quits unexplored. It is a want which Messrs Parker and Hill have detarmined to supply. Judging from the oeucert, it is evident that their manner of supplying it is judicious, and we hope will meet with the encouragement it deserves. Mr Hill gave us a fine rendering of Bach s famous “ Chaconne.” We had a brilliant trio (pianoforte, violin, and violoncello) by Jadassohn, a charming “ allegro ” from one of Beethoven’s String Quartettes,a delightful sonata of Mozart’s for violin and piano, the allegro from Schumann’! fine Quartette in E flat (for piano and strings), and a pianoforte solo, Schubert’s “ Ciav-er-* stiiek.” The fact that Mr Parker was at the piano, and that the four strings wore supplied by Messrs A. F. Hill, Spackman, Nichol and S. Kennedy, is a guarantee that all this instrumental musio was beautifully played. Miss Greig sang two taking songs of Sterndale Bennett’s in a taking manner,* and contributed Spohr’s “ Rose Softly Blooming” with much delicacy and feeling. Mr Parker during the proceeding! I thanked the audience for their attendance, ■ expressed his agreeable surprise that bo ■ many had come, explained the scope of ■ these concerts, and trusted they would dofl good work and be well appreciated. If theyfl are a all like the first one, there need be no I misgivings on the subject. A more pleasant ■ hour and a half it would be difficult to pro-fl cure in any other way. fl
