THE FROZEN MEAT TRADE.
AUST R A LI AN C OM. PE Ti IT O N. In addition to receiving frozen mutton from New Zealand, there is every prospect that the London market will be again in receipt of supplies from Melbourne. Mr John Hot3oi», of Messrs Phillips, Turnbull and Co., has just returned to Victoria fro n London, where he has made arrangements for the sale of the Colony’s meat by people of experience who are engaged in the trade on this Bide. The premises and plant of the late Australian Frozen Meat Export Uompany will be taken over for the purpose. The idea is that a fixed charge shall be made for undertaking the entire work of slaughtering, freezing, and sale in England on exactly the same principle as that adopted in the New Zealand trade, and which, so fat* as the New Zealander ia
concerned, is found to work successfully. It is hoped to secured freight at 13 16ths of a penny per lb for mutton, and the total charges from delivery of stock at works to receipt of account sales are estimated not to exceed 2d per lb. The following weights are recommended for the English market Cross breds averaging from 551 b to 751 b ; prime Merino wethers not under 471 b ; lambs (crossbred, or other), 3Chb to 401 b.
