FIRES.

About 6 o’clock on Monday evening the Thorndon fireballs rang out an alarm. The Municipal Fire Brigade were quiokly under way, and discovered that the outbreak was at some old tenements on the Hntt road, near where the Manawatu railway bridge crosses the road just before coming to Kaiwarra. When the Brigade arrived on the scene the flames had already gained a firm hold of the building*, whioh were very old and burned like tinder, the strong northerly wind that was blowing at the time causing the flames to rise to a great height and illuminate the sky for a long distance around. The fire was quickly got under, but not before the tenements had been almost burnt to the ground. They belonged to Mrs Rhodes and we understand the loss is not covered by Insurance. A clover shelter belonging to Mr James McVeigh, and two stacks of clover, belong, ing to Mr H. W. Peryman, at Tai Tapu, were burned on Saturday night.
