CITY COUNCIL. The Public Works Committee recommended at the meeting of the City Counoil last night That sanction be not_ given to the ereotion of a fence in Abel Smith 3treet by Mr A. Hoby outside the line of his property. That, in compliance with the request of the Melrose Borough Council, arrangements be made to allow of foot traffic along Grass street. That the drain in Wallace street be extended for about three chains. That, in order to economise the city water supply as much as possible, the ejectrio light be tuived otf at midnight while the City Surveyor considers same necessary ; also, that three inspectors be at once appointed to go round the city at uncertain intervals for the purpose of detecting any cases of waste of the city water, with the view of prosecuting all persona allowing such waste to take place. That the patronage of the Council be granted to an entertainment to be given at the Opera House on the 22nd inst. in aid of the fund for completing the permanent rifle range at the Upper Hutt for the meetings of the Hew Zealand Bide Association. That the architect for the Public Library be authorised to engage a clerk of works at once, the salary to be a 3 recommended fcy the architect. That with reference to the proposed establishment of soap boiling works at Mitobelltown, the Me'rose Borough Council be informed that this Council will be compelled to object to any further pollution of the stream running from Mitchelitown to Wellington. That with leference to the complaint of the Karori Borough Coancil on the subject of the culvert and gateway at entrance to the cemetery, a reply be Bent thereto in terms of the City Surveyor’s report on the subject. That further proceedings be at onoe taken to compel payment of the amount due for rateß from St Patrick’s College anl the Convent Schools. That consent be given to ft right of-way 4ft wide at town acre 81, Hopper street, as applied for by Messrs Bell, Gnlly, and Izard on behalf of Mr Wm. Prince, is Aro stream —Mr T. G. Macarthy having refused to allow the Council to enter upon bis portion of town acre 213, in order to erect a briok culvert to take the water of the said stream through hie property, in terms of the agreement oome to at the trial of the action Macarthy v. Corporation, unless the Council should first take the steps indicated in section 275 of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1886 ; and it being desirable in the Interests of public health that such culvert should now be constructed, the Committee beg to recom. mend that the Council take the benefit of such agreement, and that the steps indicated in the said section 275 be now taken, and the culvert be constructed in terms of such agreement ; and that should any claim be made by Mr Maoarthy for compensation, the tame be resisted. That accounts amounting to £368 53 6d be passed for payment.
