THE SAN FRANCISCO SERVICE

(press association.) t Auckland, December 8. In reply to a letter from the Union Steam Ship Company asking the Auckland Harbour Board, in view of the termination of the present San Francisco contract, whether they would be prepared to make any proposals which would retain Auckland as the port of call for the steamers, the Board state that while the Company pay port charges and wharfage for the vessels, about £250 per annum, they are relieved from the expenditure of £75 a year for the receiving of cargo ; that the Board provide pilot service at a cost of about £B7 a year, and that the light dues paid to the Government are about £BOO a year. The Board therefore inform the Company that they are precluded by law from showing any partiality as to the payment of dues. This means that the existing arrangements will be continued.
