ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

A young man named John Kennedy, was admitted to the Hospital on Monday morning, suffering from a severe injury to hiß spine, and bodily bruises, caused by falling out of a train on the Manawatu line. It appears that the injured man alighted from the train just after it started from a station, and falling into a ditch, struck the back of his head against a post. (from our own correspondent.) Mastekton, March 26. A Bad fatal accident occurred here on Thursday evening. Kata Butler, a domestic servant, was riding to a dance at Wangachu in company with a young man named McPhee, when her horse bolted. When McPhee overtook the horse he found it riderless, and on returning discovered the young woman lying down an embankment quite dead, her neck being broken. She is 22 years of age, and supposed to be a native of Auokfand. Masterton, March 31. Two young men named Wilson and Gillespie were out shooting yesterday, when Wilson’s gun was accidentally discharged, the contents lodging in Gillespie’s foot. He was carried into Masterton, and attended by Dr Beard. He is progressing favourably. , (per press association.) , New Plymouth, March 28. A settler named Frei, who was grinding blasting powder at Normanby on Friday evening, was seriously burned by an explosion which occurred. Auckland, March 28. Melbourne papers state that the following note was found in the pocket of a man whose body was fonnd floating near Wendowree : “ Yon will find my luggage at the railway station.—Yours truly, Henry Luck, Timaru, New Zealand.” Oamaru, March 29. William Beattee, a station manager, was found drowned in a lagoon in the town on Saturday. He had been missiDg for about a week, and it is supposed he fell into the water. Dunedin, March 28. David M’Cleary, aged 16. was run over at Brighton yesterday and killed. He was winking along the road, and gob under the horses’ feet. The body of young Le Brun, drowned last Saturday, was recovered in the Upper Harbour to-day. .j Dunedin, March 31. Wm. Campbell, a miner, was killed in the Bendigo mine, Cromwell, on Saturday. He was carrying dynamite in a backet, and a lighted candle, when an explosion occurred and Campbell was killed. Westport, March 27. Frank Desouza, an old miner, resident in the district, was accidentally drowned in the Mokihinui River yesterday. Christchurch, March 31. A child named James McKay, aged 2J years, was drowned in a tub of water standing in a back yard yesterday. Mother and obild were on a visit here from Dipton, Southland. Auckland, March 31. The old man William Veitch, who was enticed out of his bouse and brutally as. saulted and robbed on the night of the 23rd March at Wairoa South died this afternoon. On Monday last, as Veitch appeared to be sinking, his depositions were taken before two Justices of the Peace, Captain Crawford, and Mr James Bell, at his house at Wairoa South, and in the presence of Thomas Fry, alias Floyd, who had been remanded on the oharge of assault and robbery, Veitch then identified Fry as the man who assaulted him. When his depositions were taken, Veitch, who was a feeble old man, was in a bad state, his face and chest having been severely braised, and the flesh over the eyes swollen and lacerated. A telegram received in town today by Inspector Broham states that he died at a quarter past 4 this afternoon. Fry was well known in the Wairoa South dißtriot as a labourer by the name of “ The Mexican,” and has worked for Veitch for some time. Gisborne, April 1. The olothes of John Bourke, Town Clerk, were found at the end of the breakwater at 8 this morning. Bonrke went to the breakwater to bathe at 6 o’clock, and had evidently been drowned. There is no sign of the body, although a careful search has been made. It is thought likely the body will be found among the rocks at low tide. The deceased was aged 43, and has been Town Clerk of Gisborne for 10 years, haying pre. viously been accountant of the Union Bank at Gisborne, Nelson, and Invercargill. His early days were spent at Napier. Mrs Bonrke states that her husband left home at 6.30 o’clock for a bathe, saying he would not be long away, and would! be back for breakfast. The eea was very calm, but there was a very swift current running, and, as the sides of the concrete blocks were very slippery, deceased wonld have had a difficulty in getting back on to the pier. He was esteemed by every citizen, and his sad fate is a great shook to the com. munity. Ashburton, April 1. William Beattie, found drowned at Oamarn, is supposed to be thei manager of Dalgety and* Co.’s late Heron Station, Ashburton Gorge, who went tto Oamaru a fortnight ago to visit a sick friemd, and has not since been heard of.
