ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

SHOCKING OCCURRENCE AT HALCOMBE. On Saturday last (says the Feilding Star of Tuesday) a young man named Schwass, who lives with his parents at Halcombe, was rising towards home on a somewhat restive horse! He passed eoms young ladies who were also mounted, and they observed that the horse the lad was riding was beyond bis control.? Shortly afterwards they overtook him, and saw that he had been thrown, but one of his feet was entangled in the stirrup. As the lad bung head downwards the horse was kicking furiously at his body. Presently he fell clear of the horse, and one of the young ladies ran to the nearest house for water, and to obtain assistance. It wa9 evident to them Schwaes was badly hurt because his mouth was full of blood and a pool of it was under his head. As soon as possible Dr Charlton was sent for, and on his arrival he found that the injuries inflicted were something terrible. Both arms were broken, the ribs were fractured, the ends of which were forced into the lungs, and a shoulder blade smashed. The stomach was also injured. Dr Charlton at once pronounced the case hopeless, but did all that was possible under the oiroumstances. The lad was still alive this morning., (ter press association.) Dunedin, March 20. A boating accident, by which a lad named Lebrim was drowned, occurred at Broad Bay yesterday. He was out with two other lads when the accident of which no particulars are yet to hand, took place. The two others reached the shore, but Lebrim was drowned. He was living with hia mother, a widow in South Dunedin. Air McLightmont, carpenter, while at work at the Brookdale Estate, Tapauui, fell down dead on Saturday. Deceased, who was 53 years of age, had been unwell for some time. , nft Feilding, March 20. A. man named Gunderson, while buskfelling to-day in the Harbour Board Block, was struck by a dead branch, and his thigh fractured in two places and bis head injured. He is also internally injured, and his recovery is hopeless. Hokttiica, March 20. A miner named Matthew Donciate was found dead in his claim near Goldaborough this morning. He has not been observed about since Saturday, so probably he has been dead some days. Death was apparently due to a fall of earth. Auckland, March 20. A gum dealer named Thomas Lyons, a single man, fell overboard from a yacht in thenorthern Wairoa River and was drowned. He had been drinking heavily for some time, and was in a weak state. . An old man named Patrick O Bnen. G 4 years of age, a stone breaker at Mount Eden quarries, was found dead this morning at his work. Death was caused by serous apoplexy. Christchurch, March 22. A wool waggon and horses belonging to Mr Acton Adams, went over Jolhe’s Pass on Friday. The four horses were killed, and the driver, a man named Newman, was so badly injured that his life is despaired °*' Christchurch, Maioh23. An inquest on the late Mr J. B. Gresson was held to-night. The medical evidence showed that he had heen subject to attacks of vertigo lately. The verdict was accidental death. , __ Westport, March 23. At the inquest held to-day on the body of John Norton, whose body was found in the River Buffer yesterday, and who is supposed to have been drowned on the 10th inst, a verdict of found drowned was returned. There was no evidence to show how he got into the river. Norton was a native of Lyttelton, where his mother and brothers reside. He was aged 28, and unmarried.
