THE WESLEYAN CONFERENCE.

(PER press association. 1 Auckland, Inarch 12. At to-day’s sitting of the Wesleyan Conference it was resolved to grant £2oa year to the Native minister, Te Kote, as a. retiring allowance. A committee was appointed to provide for the cost of an assistant to the Rev W. Moriey. The levy for the children’s fund was increased from sixteen to seventeen and a half per cent. A recommendation from Nelson and Canterbury that permission be given to Rev J. Gibson to do deputation work for foreign missions waa left in the hands of the President. It was resolved that Home Mission grants to the following Districts be allowed to continue :—Rangltikel, Palmerston North. Tauranga, Eketahuna and Kiwitea; the Kumara station to be asked to increase its subscription by £5. A representation from Wellington that tha Maori work should be separated from the English Home Mission work was not agreed to. A motion by Mr Mofham, of

Wellington, to the effect that when an early meeting delegated its powers to committee, , and that committee gave an invitation to a minister, it should be deemed to have come from the quarterly meeting, was negatived. The appointment by the General Conference of the Revs. J. Berry and W. Moriey as re« presentatives of New Zealand at the Ecu* menical Conference in Washington was confirmed. Auckland, March 13. The Wesleyan Conference to-day resolved to pay the travelling expenses of the Maori members who attended the Conference. The Superintendent of the Durham street Circuit and Mr W. Harris were appointed Treasurers of tha Contingent Fund. Certain recommendations for the relief of the Hokitika Trust, whioh is greatly burdened with debt, were adopted. A request from the Oamaru Trustees that the Church and Building Loan Fund Committee allow instalments due by that Trust to stand over for favourable consideration of the Committee. The opinion of Sir Frederick Whitaker was read that the extension of the Ministerial term of residence on circuit from three to five years would be ultra vires, though he admitted there might be sufficient reason to act on the resolution if the General Conference granted permission for such a step, and especially as he did not see that any mischief or inconvenience would arise if that were done. Eventually it was resolved to bring the permissive legislation into operation as soon as that could be legally done. Auckland, March 14. The Wesleyan Conference decided to-day to erect a memorial stone to the memory of the late John Probert, who recently bequeathed a large sum to the church. Anapplication was received from the relatives of the deceased for financial help out of tbe estate was declined, as the Conference was only custodian of the money, and had no power to appropriate it to any other objects than those for which it was bequeathed. The Conference had a picnic at Lake Takapuna to-day. March 15. The Wesleyan Conference have resolved to take no further action regarding the proposed issue of Jubilee uedals. A resolution was passed expressing deep regret at the prevalence of gambling, aud asking the Premier to introduce legislation on the subject, and especially that the legalising of tha totalisator be revoked. It was decided that both ministers and lay representatives at the Conference should vote for the election of president and secretary. Those members of the Committee of Privileges who reside in Wellington were appointed a committee to confer with the representatives of other churches In obtaining well-selected Bible lessons for use iu the day schools. A majority of the Southern members left for their homes this morning in the Takapuna. Three alterations were made In the third draft ofjstations. The Rev C. Griffin was appointed to Hokitika, the Rev S. J. Gibson Gisborne, and the Rev J. Dellow to Temuka. It was agreed to let Durham street, Christchurch, remain as fixed in the third draft. A cablegram was read from the Victorian Conference stating that the Rev A. J. Taylor, of Wanganui district, was appointed to the Warnambool district, and also as chairman of that district.
