The Governor's Picnic.

Last Thursday week the Governor gave a picnic in honor of the German squadron. A special train carrying the invited guests—some eighty in all—left Wellington at 10.15, and ran straight through to Pigeon Bush, stopping only at the Lower Hutt for a few minutes to pick up Mrs Pearce and the Misses Webb. On arriving at their destination the party walked through the bush to Mr Tringham’s pretty residence, where luncheon was ready spread on long tables under the trees. Needless to say the luncheon was excellent, and as the day was a very warm one the iced cups were much appreciated. After the gentlemen had discussed their beer and cigars, and the ladies their coffee under the trees, the party lounged about the grounds enjoying themselves. Then came the prolonged train whistle, warning them it was time to return to their compartments. ' Some of the stragglers, more leisurely iff their movements than the rest, were aroused to active exertion by the frantic waving of arms and other signals of distress, and arrived at the train hot and breathless, only to find they had twenty minutes to spare. It was an ideal summer’s day. The scenery was beautiful, and looked its best.. The guests must have been hard to please if they did hot enjoy the outlook and surroundings! Most of the ladies were dressed in cool
