In liis busy mind’s recesses, Curious odds and ends are rtorcd — Gathered here aDd there at. random, Like a migpie’s motley hoard. Patter, patter, fall the raindrops ; Bang, hung, Jarr.ib’s hammer goes. As ho works and whistles guilv, Heedless of the souuding blows. Sister Amy, by the fireside, Groans, and murmurs, * Dreadful boys !’ Then, ‘ My dear, what are you doing That requires such a noise ? * Always working, alweys pounding ! Why not read your pret'y book ? Come and sit beside me, aurliug.’ Jamie's head, in protest, shook. ‘No? Then see poor sister crying ! See the big tears downward creep.’ *Ho 1’ said Jamie, ‘ I don’t mind ’em; * Men must work and women weep.’
