PALMERSTON NORTH.

(FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.) June 28. I have not until last evening had an opportunity of seeing the Theatre Royal since the alterations recently made by the new proprietor were completed, and I must say I was agreeably surprised to find what a change had been effected. Messrs Linton and Mowlam have evidently been at very considerable expense, and they have certainly managed to transform what was formerly a building ns inconvenient, dilapidated, and uncomfortable as can woll be imagined into one of the prettiest theatres in the Coiony, excepting, of course, those in the larger centres. The appearance of the hall is now bright and cheerful, the ventiiation and lighting are good, and the acoustic properties are all that can be desired. To Bee so large an assemblage present must have been very gratifying to Mr Miln and his talented company, the new dress circle, and in fact every part of the house being ■well filled. June 30. ; 1 On Saturday evening the Theatre Royal was again crowded, the play being “Hamlet,”.in which Mr Miln and his company made, if possible, even a greater hit than on their first appearance. The football match played here between Palmerston and Oroua Bridge on Saturday was a very hollow affair, resulting in a victory for the local team by 29 points to nil.' I learn this morning that 'he match played between Wanganui and Foilding teams the same day, on the ground of the former, resulted in a win for Feildiug by four points to three, viz , a goal and a try to a goal. Yesterday wax cold and wintry, rain falling heavily during the afternoon and night. This morning it is brighter, but the glass is v< ry low and now registers 29'5, with Borne little appearance of rising.
