SPORTING TOPICS.

(By Martini.)

New Zealand lost a notable representative by the death of Eossiter in Australia the other day. He was by May King from a Traducer mare, and was bred, I believe, in the Wanganui district. He will be remembered as the winner of the last steeplechase here. The steeplechase that Eossiter won at the A. J.C. Winter Meeting, was a sweep of 5 sovs. each for starters, with 400 sovs. added, 100 sovs. to the second horse. Eossiter, who carried 9st 71b, started at 6 to 1 against, Busban (I2st 91b) being favourite at 2 to 1 against. The race seems to have been a remarkable one. Over a mile from home Native (list 81b) started away with the lead, but was caught by Eossiter, and the pair raced together, nothing else being in it. Six furlongs from home Native was beaten to a standstill, and Eossiter won as he liked by 15 lengths from Grafton, who passed Native in the straight. Time, 7min 26secs, the distance being 3 miles. Eossiter was ridden by G. Laing. At the same meeting Hilda carried Bst 111 b and ran unplaced in the Winter Stakes, a mile and a quarter, won by Muriel. J. Eae arrived in Sydney a week or two ago with Orangeman, Donald, and a couple of ponies. In the Victorian Eacing Club Grand National hurdle race, about three miles, Lochiel's weight is 12st 21b, Mangaohane was allotted lOst 91b, and Donald 9st 3ib. In the steeplechase Mangaohane had list 10;b, Titokowaru, 11s 91b; Peter Osbeck, list 71b ; Waitangi, lOst 21b; Satan, 10it; Eossiter, 9st 91b (on which conditions he must have been very hard to beat); and Messenger, 9sl 71b, Mr P. Campbell contemplates a trip Home, and will resign the startership of the C.J.C. Mr John Oresswell, of Hororata, is spoken of as his probable successor. The Painter mare Germaine is in foal to Puriri. ‘ Gipsy King 5 is informed that Mr J. Nelson has refused about £2oofor Pyramus, the ‘hack.’ and wanted £l5O. Eecluse is picking up, but is not likely to go into work till September. If Lochiel retains any of his old.form and can be got to the post fit and well, he will certainly not be out of the Caulfield Cup with 9st 81b, though of the New Zealanders Eussley, Bst 81b, and Sultan seem to me to look beston paper. These and Charmer, Bst 71b; Oakleigh, Bst 101 b; Rudolph, Ssi 61b; Titan, Bst; Pygmalion, 7st9lb; Whimberel, 7st 71b; Willga, 7st 61b; and Litigant, Sst 131 b, seem to be about the pick of the handicap. Sinecure is also well enough treated with Sst 61b, but like others of the Martini-Henry stock he has not lasted well. Mr Gollan cannot complain of the treatment Eenata and Jet d’Eau have received, and Eubv and Tongariro are also very leniently dealt with. The breakdown of Donovan is a circumstance worthy of notice. As a two-year-old he raced 13 times, scored 11 winning brackets, including such valuable prizes as the Portland Stakes (Leicester Spring Meeting), New Stakes (Ascot June Meeting), Middle Park Plate (Newmarket Second October Meeting), Dewhurst Plate (Newmarket Houghton October Meeting) ; ran second to Chitafcob in the Whitsuntide Plate (Manchester May Meeting), and third to Eldorado in the Prince of Wales Stakes (Goodwood July Meeting); his winnings amounting to £16,487 15s. His three-year-old career was correspondingly brilliant, for he carried silk eight times for seven winning brackets, among which may be mentioned the Prince of Wales Stakes (Leicester Spring Meeting), Newmarket Stakes (Newmarket Second Spring Meeting), Derby (Epsom Summer Meeting), Prince of Wales Stakes (Ascot June Meeting), St. Leger (Doncaster September Meeting, and Lancashire Plate (Manchester September Meeting), and only once suffered defeat—in the Two Thousand Guineas, won by Enthusiast. His winnings in stakes alone for the season reached the phenomenal sum of £35,666 15s, which, added to his two year-old stakes, totals £55,154 10s. Chris Neilson is to row Stephenson, a Tasmanian (not the New Zealander) for £IOO a-side at the end of this month. This from the Melbourne Sportsman : —A young gentleman hailing from New Zealand has recently reached these shores, and as he is anxious to show his powers in the saddle in some of onr amateur cross-country events, we have inserted this paragraph. Tne person in question, Mr D. M. Moodie, has proved successful in similar events in the land of his birth, and bearing, as ha does, letters of recommendation from such a master of the art as Mr J. Eae, the owner of Titokowaru and Guy Fawkes, he should soon be accommodated with a mount. Billy Murphy has challenged any Bst 81b man in England for the feather-weight championship of the world, which he n°w holds. The well-known brood mare Slander, dam of the Flying Billingsgate and Foul Shot, died at Auckland recently. Mr C. Luke of the Waikato, who recently bought Natator, paid £250 for him. < The Mile Professional Bicycling Championship of England has this year fallen to Bob English, who got home by only a foot from Howell, while Tom English was only a yard behind. The time was 2min 54£secs. The winner is an ex-amateur, and belongs to North Shields. The same rider has also annexed the Twenty Mile Professional Championship, Eoberts being second, _T. English again occupying third place. Time, lh 14min 8 l-sth sec. ... Another team of baseballers for Australia is talked of. I am indebted to the secretary of the G. J.C. for a copy of the club programme for seasons 1890-91; and to Mr Sydney James, secretary of the Dunedin J.C., for a pamphlet of the handicapping correspondence. W.E.C. STEEPLECHASES.
