(By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) , THE EARL OF CARNARVON. 1 (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) London, June 27. The Earl of Carnaivon is sinking. London, June 28. The Earl of Carnarvon is dead. [Henry Howard Molvneux Herbert, fourth ■ iEari of Carnarvon, was born 1831, and succeeded his father in 1849. He graduated as a tirst-class in classics at Oxford in 1852, and D.C.L. in 1859. He was in the same year appointed High Steward of the University of Oxford. He was pro-Grand Master of Freemasons in England since 1875, Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies 1857-9, and Secretaiy 1866-7 and _ 1874-8. He resigned his seat in the Cabinet January 24, 1878, in consequence of ids disagreement with his colleagues as to the policy of ordering the British Fleet t > proceed to the Dardanelles. He considered this to be a departure from the policy of neutrality which the Government had pledged themselvee to preserve as long as neither of the belligerents infringed certain conditions which Her Majesty's Government itself had laid down. 1 Lord Carnarvon was Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland from June, 1885, to January, 1886. He was the author of several works on travel, archaeology, social ethics, anu classical poetry, his iatext work being a verse translation of the Odyssey. He first married in 1861 Lady Evelyn Stanhope (who died in 1875) and secondly December 31, 1878, Elizabeth Catherine Howard. His heir is Lord Porcriex e.r. He was created a K.C. B. in May, i 874, on the completion and opening of the Chelsea embankment, and succ. erled to a baronetcy on i he death of his father, May 27, 1876. He succeeded to the Antrim estates of the late Ch rffs MoGarel of Magheramorne, from which place the late baronet took bis title.]
