SPORTING TOPICS.

BY MARTINI

Churchill, who won the Newm.arket the other day, was bold as a tjyo-yljarold to his present owner for 475.'guineas'. The demand for New Zealand horses in Australia continues strong, -and the latest emigrant is the Aucklaud steeplechaser, Guy Fawkes. Efforts have been made recently to bring Engagement (MartiniHenry’s full sister) for Australia, but without success.

Tempting odors have been made to the respective owners of Boz and Melos to sell, Boz being wanted for England and Melos for India. So far, however, no deal has been effected.

The privileges of the Dunedin Anniversary meeting this year realised ";£I2S 10s, as against £95 10s last year. In last week’s issue (says the Sportsman of the 12tb) reference was made to some remarks of Sir William Fitzherbert, who, on opening the Wellington Racing Club’s new grand stand the other day, said ‘ racing was first started in New Zealand at the Hutt, thirty-six years ago.’ Several correspon- " dents questioned the accuracy of this statement, and while they all appeared to agree that the credit of the first attempt to acclimatise the sport belongs to Wellington, they placed it at a much earlier period of the colony’s history. Yesterday Mr Watt (of Messrs Robertson and Wagner) called on me with an old newspaper clipping dated the 22nd October, 1842, which clearly proves that racing was going on merrily at Wellington (or Pitone) in ’42. Races were run then in heats, and Mr Watt’s chestnut horse Figaro won the principal sweepstakes, owing, as the sportirig scribe of the day remarked, to ‘ his superior blood.’ Lochiel has been put 'into work at Melbourne by Rudiugß, his new owner, and will noc go to the stud just yet. ; Carbine’s winnings at the Y.R.C. meeting ran up to £1443, so that, he has exceeded considerably the £3OOO Mr Donald Wallace paid for him. ‘Vigilant,’ in the Sportsman, predicts that the horse will sweep the board in the weight-for-age races at Randwiok next April.

Mr J. White’s winnings at the meeting amounted to £5547 ; Mr S. Davis’ to £1941 (the value of the ewmarket Handicap) ; and Mr Gannon’s to £1645. Mr Stead won £774.

It was rumoured in Melbourne recently that a syndicate had purchased Mr J. White’s yearlings privately, the price being 500 guineas per head. It subsequently transpired that a Victorian sportsman had bought the lot.

It is said that the notorious ‘ Mr Abington’ pays over £IO,OOO for traning bills alone. 1 •

The new Duke of Manchester is (or was) Lord Mandeville, a young gentleman who has been concerned in several rows in which SlaviD, the pugilist, was also a party. O’Connor, the Cauadian oarsman, is disposed to be rather reticent about his future movements. The latest idea is that the Australian scullers shall row a sort of tournament, the best man to be matched against O’Connor. There has been some talk in Melbourne of a match between Joe Goddard and Tom Lees. Up to the present nothing has been arranged. The unfortunate Wakatipu has changed hands. Mr R. Ray has at last got tired of the Australian, and has sold him to Mr W. G. Dennett for a century. Wakatipu is worth all the money, if only for stud purposes, and it ia also to be 'remembered that Mr Dennett is particularly clever at making good ones out of bad ones. Kneecap was sold by auction at Melbourne recently, a Mr 11. Ryan being'the purchaser at 180 guineas. At the same sale Soudan was sold for ISO guineaa also. A lamentable incident is reported by an exchange to have occurred at Flemington. Just as Dreadnought landed a winner for the Australian Cup, an elderly man was observed to drop dead on the couise. He was identified aB one Fox, a tile layer, who resided at Caulfield. He had backed the double of Churchill and Dreadnought for £2OO, and the excitement of winning was too much for him. Ho had been under the care of a doctor for an affection of the heart, and had been warned against exciting himself.

London, March 19.

The Australian horses Plutarch, Narellan, and Kirkham have had a gallop of one mile at beat pace. They will probably run before the Epsom meeting. Surefoot remains a strong favourite for the Derby at 7 to 2 against. ' J

London, March 23.

Although Kirkham finished ahead of Plutarch and Narellan in the recent trial, Matthew Dawson is of opinion that Narellan is the beat of the trio.

London, March 24.

The Times, referring to Mr Jas. White’s Derby candidates, states that the debut ol the colts at Newmarket will be awaited with much interest by all sporting men. Normanby and Plutarch ran last in the Trial stakes at the Lincoln meeting. The betting is 18 to 1 against Narellan and Kirkham, cpupled. for the Dei by.

Plutarch started in the Trial Stakes at Lincoln meeting merely to ascertain the relative form of Air White’s horsed. London, March 25.

Mr White’s Derby candidate Kirkham is being steadily trained, and is sent for a gallop once every day, but Narellan, the other nominee, has been granted a spell, and at the present does not take bi 3 usual exercise.

(SPECIAL TO PRESS ASSOCIATION.) London, M arch 25. Chicago, an Australian horse, who started in the Lincoln Trial Stakes appeared to be very sore, and did not run in anything like form. It is thought that Plutarch merely started in the Trial Stakes to qualify for future events. The course was very wet, and the going heavy. D.J.C. ANNIVERSARY RACES. (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
