SPORTING TOPICS.

(BY MARTINI.)

It is quite in accord vvitn the poetic fitness of things that Dudu, returning to Wanganui, the scene of her first triumphs, should win the cup on Thursday last. Apparently the Wanguwui air agrees with the mare, for in spite of her impost of Sst 21b, she won pretty easily, Wakatipu, the unfortunate, bsiiig the . only other Btarter who made things at all warm. On the second day she put up 101 b more, and was beaten by Hilda, to whom she conceded 261 b in the Wanganui stakes. Whether justly or not I cannot say, but the Chronicle says that Matthews raced the mare all along the back Btretch so that she had nothing in for the finish. On the other hand Hilda is a hot customer to give a lot of weight to over a mile and a half, and it doesn’t seem likely that Marthews would make such a serious mistake. Besides Hilda’s victory in the Stakes the Auckland contingent only secured one other win, the Flying Handicap falling to Antelope. Patchwork was a severe frost, for in spite of light weights he could get no better than second, right up to the Consolation, in which he wsb beaten at level weights by Boulunger. Pygmalion showed his superiority over the other youngsters by winning the Wanganui two-year-old stakes easily, but as he wasscratched for theNhrsery Handicap, a smaller stake, on the second day, the others got a show, and Dreamland by CadoganSiesta. and La retite Fille, by Sou’Wester— Lady .Grey, made a dead beat of it ; and of of the hurdle races the first fell to Oddfellow who had only Armourer to beat, and the second to Tongariro’B brother Ruapehu, who, with 9st up, ran home an easy winner. A • very formidable trio of hacks—the Colonel, Surprise and Cheque—were on hand and won a race each, the Colonel carrying list • illb to victory in the Hack Hurdles, and Cheque lOst in the flat race. Cheque, who is by Cocksure—Jo, is evidently a long.way above hack form. If St. James keeps in good Rumour and form he must be formidable in the Great Autumn at 7st 71b. Leaving Sultan and Scots Grey out of consideration for the present, Merrie England, 9st lib j Whisper, Bst 71b ; Ruby, Sst 31b ; Rose Argent, Bst ; Cynisca, Bst j and St. James, are about the pick of the handicap, though Uudu will have to be reckoned with in spite of her top weight. , Wolverine is a horse who would take a tremendous lot of beating, but his people are seldom able to get him fit and well at the post; and Quibble, if be we e the horse he used to be —what a moral he would be at 6st 121 b ! A subscription list in aid of Mr N. Miller, the lessee of the horse Peter, wbo was killed at the Wairarapa meeting the other day, is , open at Greymouth. Abercorn pulled up lame after a gallop recently, and ‘ Vigilant ’ does not thinh the horse will ever race again, and will go to the stud. Supposing Mr White quits racing and goes into the stud farm business, what a revenue he could make, with Chester, old as be is,? Abercorn, Martini Henry and Trident .([if I am not mistaken he still owns the son ■ of Robinsen Crusoe and Coooanut.) - First money in -the Oakleigh Handicap which Titan won for Mr \N hite Jaßt mouth, was worth £525. Tongariro, who carried 7st Illb in the race, ran fourth. I notice that at the same meeting Maggie, a four-year-old by Darebin —Margaret, ran a dead heat with Meltonian, by Savanaka —Lethe, in the Hawksburn Handicap. Titan is declared to be the best two-year-old Australia has seen for many a year. By his victories in the All-aged Stakes and Loch Place at Flemington last week Carbine repeated his performance of last year, when he won the same races, with the Champion added on. ' Goddard, the Australian ohampion of the Barrier, is about to make a trip to England. .A big lump of a fellow, full of pluck, a hard {bitter, and not lacking in science, Goddard ... <nsght to do well an j where, even if he has to jjgaik experience in a defeat or two. It is improbable that Lorraine will race tagain. He ought to be a useful horse at <the stud. Seward’s famous record of 9£ secs, for 100 - >yards has long been the subject of much speculation, and it is now contended that the record ought to be expunged, having been made with a flying start and on a downhill course. The next best record is 9 4-sth secs., made by Johnson and Bethune, the Americans. Moorbbnk, the horse about whom so much was said in connection with the last Caulfield Cup, broke his leg at Melbourne recently and had to be destroyed. A post-mortem [revealed the fact that the hor&e’s hind were decayed, and there were indi- • Nations of poison. It is probable, therefore, (that the Caulfield Cup question will be reopened. 1 1 JF; Rae, who left Auckland for Sydney last week, took with him the jumping horse Titokowaru and the pony Ihumata. Tfftarnnhaw r who went by the same boat, •took with him GatliDg (ahuraler by Musket), Tapaki, and the ponies Fanny Fißher and Nigger. By[Electric Telegraph.—Copyright . V.R.C. AUTUMN MEETING. (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Melbourne, March 0. The threatening weather militated against the attendance of the third-day’s racing of t the V.R.C., but his Excellency the Govei nor , . and suite were present. After the first raoe bad been rnn a terrific thunderstorm, which

lasted fully half an hour, burst and thoroughly saturated the ground. Wyvis, from his running on Tuesday, was made a hot favourite for the Hurdle Race, and the issue was never in doubt. Despite the rain Prelude was made a very strong favourite for the Nursery Handicap, and being given all the best of a start never let his opponents have a show. Following up the success of White’s stabie, Singapore was made a very warm favourite for the Autumn Handicap, but ran a perfect brute, scots Grey coming up in the last furlong and fairly smothering Tantallon. After this reverse Dreadnought, wbo had been supported at 7 to 4 on for tke Champion Stakes, receded to 5 to 4, Carbine, against whom 2to 1 had been laid, shortening to 6to 4, The result, however, proved that Mr Gannon’s representative was better than the pair, and landed the great weight-for-age stakes by a length and a half. The following are the results : Second Hurdle Race. About two mile 3. Wyvis, 10st 121 b ... (Scobie) 1 Shanks, 9st 121 b (Cnbitt) 2 Tiber, lOst Ferguson) 3 Five horses started. Scots Grey waited on his field until the last furlong, when he came with a great rush, and. cutting his opponents down like chaff, won cleverly by three-quarters of a length. Time, 2min sSfsec. Champion Stakes ; weight for age. Three miles. Melos (Harris) 1 Dreadnought ... ... ... (Hales) 2 Carbine (O’Brien) 3 Rudolph (Huxley) was the only other starter. Rudolph was sent to cut out the pace in the interest of his stable companion, Melos racing alongside, Carbine, the favourite, loitering in the rear. In the first half mile Rudolph had a lead of 20 lengths, Melos lying second four lengths ahead of Carbine, behind whom was Dreadnought two lengths away. By he river straight the latter traced np to Carbine, but it was not till the abattoirs were reached that any great difference wa3 made in Rudolph’s advantage. At the scraping sheds the two closed on the leader, and a ding-dong tussle resulted in the favourite being first into the straight followed by Melos and Carbine, Rudolph dropping away beaten. Half-way up the straight Carbine made his. effort, bat Olßrien, endeavouring to get up on the inside, was blocked, and Dreadnought, throwing up the sconge in the last hundred yards, Melos scored a splendid victory by a length and a half, Carbine being a half length hehind Dreadnought. Time, smin 51sec. The last mile and a half of the race was run in 2min n g—s to 4 on Dreadnought, 6 to 4 against Carbine, 8 to 1 against Melos. Special Juvenile Stakes. The Autumn Meeting of the V.R.C. was brought to a close to-day, with beautiful midsummer weather. The attendance, was fully equal to that of the opening day, and his Excellency the Governor and party were again present. A field of six contested the' All-Aged Stakes, Carbine being installed a firm favourite. The good thing was never in doubt, as he won in a common canter by fourlengths, in exceedingly good time. Medallion and Utter finished a dead heat for third place, a length behind Magic Circle. Proh Pudor and YViora divided the favouriteahip amongst the youngsters in the Unplaced Stakes until just before the start, when a strong demonstration in favour of Proh Pudor. who is in the same stable as Jessina, sent him up to the top of the quotations. Power had everything beaten two furlongs from home, and fairly, romped borne in front of Elworthy, a fine upstanding colt, who is sure to be heard of in the future. Never was a better start made at Flemington than that for the Plaoe Handicap, Watson’s effort being greeted with applause. Tantallon, who started favourite, justified the confidence reposed in him, and, wearing down Bonnie Spec in the last hundred yards, won by three-quarters of a length. Cripps was again successful in the steeplechase, Lawler, a grandly-bred horse for jumping (being by Sussex from Fair Nell), smothering tfae field in the straight. Only three started for the Loch Plate, for which Carbine went ont a hot favourite at 5 to 1 on, and he won very comfortably at tbe finish.
