The N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency’s London Circular of December 28th, speaking of New Zealand hemp, says : The decline in values referred to in our last issue has been confirmed during the past month, and latterly, partly owing to the incidence of the holidays, the market has become extremely quiet, and to effect sales a further decline of 10s per ton has been accepted. At auctions some 3000 bales have been offered, of which about 2500 bales have found buyers at and shortly after the sales. Good to welldressed Lyttelton realised from L 29 10s to L3l per ton ; good medium Wellington, well cleaned, from L 29 10s to L3O per ton ; and fair medium from L2B 10s to ,L 29 per ton ; ivhile rather strawy parcels of fair colour brought from L 27 10s to L2B per ton, poorly cleaned and off colour from L 26 10s to L 27 per ton, and ordinary coarse and strawy fibre from L 25 to L 26 per ton. “ Hackled ” hemp, short to fairly long, has been in rather better demand at from L24to L 26 iOs per ton. Some 500 bales good Auckland tow have been disposed of at auction at L 7 per ton, and 100 ! ales Wellington at from L 5 10s to L 6 17s 6d per ton. The market for Manila during the earlier part of the past month continued firm, and values marked a distinct advance ; but latterly a quieter tone has prevailed, and prices close somewhat below the highest point. On the spot, “current” is now quoted at L 45 15s to L 46 5s per ton, c.i.f. Sisal has been rather pressed for sale to arrive without attracting demand ; on the spot it is quoted nominally at about L 42 per ton'.
