SAD FATALITY.

(ri5R PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Nelson, February 2. During yesterday afternoon the firebell rang, someone having set fire to the grass and trees at the Botanical Gardens, and Captain Lightfoot, of the fire brigade, and city surveyor, hastened from home, running a considerable distance, when he jumped into a oab. On reaching the scene it was found he had fainted, and after some efforts he revived. He was driven to a doctor’s but pronounced to be dead from a stoppage of the heart’s action. On his comrades learning this the firebells were tolled and a gloom was thrown over the whole town, for the deceased was exceedingly well liked. Nelson, February 5. The funeral of the late Captain Lightfoot took place this afternoon, when all the business places were closed and flags were flying halt mast. The Mayor and Corporation, the Nelson and Richmond Fire Brigades, Salvage Corps, Masons, representatives of the insurance companies, and a great number of citizens followed in the procession. The Fire Brigade and Bijou Band preceded the fire-engine, on which was borne the coffin, on which were placed the deceased’s coat, helmet, and many wreaths, including one from the Wanganni Fire Brigade, Part of the Church service took place at the Cathedral, the Primate and the Rev Mr f£empthorne officiating thereat.
