SPORTING TOPICS.

(BY MARTINI.)

Barge, the Austialian boxer, beat Sam Baxter, the Fuglish light-weight, in 22 rounds. Baxter had the European reputation of being a perfect John L. Sullivan at his own weight, and Barge, though a good man, is not a real tip-topper. I fancy be was beaten by W. Murphy about three years ago. However that may be. Barge is a sort of te-it for all the new-comers to Melbourne, Can Englishmen and Americans fight at all ? Peter Jackson, who had to do his level best to get to the colonial championship, has beaten Jsm Smith, McAulifle, Cardiff, and Godfrey very easily. And be it remembered that Godfrey, at any rate, is no slouch. A few years ago a lot of money could have been found to back him against Sullivan. In the middle-weight division we have Smith putting Frank Glover, the Chicago beavv-weieht, down in nine roundb. It took Joe McAulifle over 20 rounds to do the tamo thing. If Smith can get over men a class above him in weight, what sort of man must McCarthy He, who was always Smith’s master ? The two men fought a long draw, certainly, but McCarthy had a broken arm. Amongst, the light-weights Goanan and Mulboliand have held their own everywhere, though by no means at the top of the tree in Australia. Of feather weights W. Murphy ia champion, having beaten Weir (bolder of the champion belt) and Griffin. The AUceroy’s Cup at the Calcutta meeting was won by Lord Win. Beresford’s Enlish horse Pennant, Moorhouse, the Australian, being second, Australian horses won nearly all the other events. At the Epsom races (Victoria) on January 24, Rewi carried Bst 101 b and won the Dundenong Handicap, five furlongs and a half. The biggest price paid at the Hobartville sale of stock was 300 guineas for a filly by Grand Flaneur —Banksia. Lord Sheffield’s team for the opening match of Boyle’s Australian team will consist of W. G. Grace, Newham, W. W. Read, Stoddart, Shrewsbury, Lohman, Peel, AllewelJ, Brigts, Pelling, ank Humphreys. If the colonials can beat that they can beat anything. Mr T. W. Busst, the celebrated Australian cyclist, has been disqualified for two years by the Victorian Union for assaulting a spectator. He had previously had a black mark against him for disorderly behavior, aud complaints were also made that he had allowed his brother to win a race that he himself could have won. A writer in Truth says lhat one of the best judges at Newmarket is of opinion that Narelian and Kirkhamare a couple of ‘coach horses,’ and that creatures with such action will have no chance at Epsom, however smart they might be over courses more suitable to them —3uch, for example, as Ascot or Doncaster. In the course of a sketchy article 1 Augur’ says that Mr W. Wool cot t ‘complains, with some reason we all agree, at the manner in which Manton has been treated since he purchased him.’ George Bubear, the English sculler, has arrived in Australia and submitted to the inevitable interview. He says Matterson beat him all the way on the Thames, and he doesn’t expect to be able to turn the tables on him. As to tno championship, Bubear thinks O’Connor is the best man rowing, though he excepts Stansbury, whom he hasn’t seen. Mr Gollan has scratched all his horses for the Australian Cup and Newmarket Handicap. However, there are sufficient IS ew Zealanders left in both events to give ub a big race, Bravo, Melos, Oakleigh, Carbine, and Dreadnought having accepted. I shall siick to my prediction when the weights come out that one of that lot will win.
