CRICKET.

SENIOR CUP. The match between the Phoenix and Star Ciufea’ first elevens was concluded on Saturday, the former winning rather easily by eight wickets. The Stars, who bad lost one wicket for 25 runs when stamps were drawn on the previous Saturday, continued their second innings; which olosed for 120. Roberts played well for 38, and J. Blacklock, G. Manaill, G. Mansill, and Pope all lent valuable assistance. Taylor bowled well for the winners, securing seven wickets for 54. Frith, who was so successful in the first innings, proved rather expensive, his one wicket costing 34 runs. The fielding of the Phoenix team was again good, and Ogier is deserving of special mention for his fine catch at point, which dismissed Brown. OTHER MATCHES. A practice match was played on the Basin Reserve on Saturday between members of the Wellington Club. Thete were ouly nine players fin each side. The tearti captained bv Ronaldson scared 119, Johnston 31, Kirker iB, Sutcliffe and Ronaldson 14, and Boddington 10. The second team made 130, Meek 37, Day 15, Francis ,27, Kreeft 16, and Robinson (who batted twice in the same innings) 25, not out. Kreeft, for the winners, ai d Kirker and Newbold for the losers, were the most successful bowlers. An interesting match was played onSaturday afternoon between teams representing P. Hayman and Co. and Sargood, Son, and Ewen. Read captained the former, and winning the toss, elected to hat. They made a good start, but when the last wicket fell the total was only 35, A. Black lock and Robinson being too straight for their Opponents, of whom C. Tavlor (with 15) was the only one to reach double figures. The men of cloth and,leather then went to the wickets in high glee at the small taßk set them, but, alas for human hopes! one by one did they retire crestfallen, and at the cry of “all out” the tel-graph registered ouly 27, of which Salmon made 10. Again the fancy goods mou .went forth to achieve glory, but this time Robinson and Disher denied it to them, their second innings only producing 44, C. Taylor again being to the fore with IS. This only left the sofbgoods 53 to win, and with all speed they commenced to compile this number, but when 36 had been recorded Taylor mercilessly scattered the stumps of the last man, Disher contributing 11 to the total. The full scores were—Hayman and Co., 35 and 44, total 79; Sargood, 27 and 36, total 63; majority for Hayman, 16. Robinson, Disher and Blaoklock divided the bowling honours for the losers, while on the other side C. Taylor took twelve wickets for 29, and Read eight for 32. A match was played at Pitone on Saturday between the Midland third eleven and the Pitone Star second, the former winning ty 39 runs. Scores—Midland, 77 (Ambler 23, Keiling 18, Belworthy 10) ; Pitone Star second 38 (W. Webley and Woollett 8 each, and Oxennam 7). W. Webley and Woollett bowled well for the losers, and for the winners Belworthy took 8 wickets for 13 runs. A match was played at Pitone on Saturday between the Korokoro C.C. and a team representing John Duthiel and Co., which resulted in a win for the latter by 48 runs on the first innings. Scores —Korokoro, 28 ; Duthie, 76. For the latter Wilson 22 and Waters 19 were top scorers, aud Dixon, Dyer, and Anderson shared the bowling honours. Maber bowled best for the Korokoro C.C. In their second innings Korokoro scored 82 (Ramsden 29, Haigh 22). The result was a win for the Uniteds by an innings and 27 runs.
