CHIEF DETECTIVE BROWNE RETRENCHED.
(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, January 13. To-day Chief Detective Browne, of the Auckland force, received notice that his services would not be required after the 15th instant, but that he would be allowed to retire on the pension of an inspector, as he had previously held that position. Auckland, January 14. The reason given for dispensing with Chief Detective Browne’s services is that that officer’s health is not good. On receipt of tho notice of dismissal, Detective Browne was examined by Dr MeKellar, who gave him a certificate stating that he had attended him during a severe attaek of rheumatism, but that Mr Browne is now in excellent health, and fit for any duty required by the Department. The compensation to Detective Browne is at the rate of a month’s pay for eaab year of service on the basis of fcha salary drawn by him as Inspector.
